Is it up to 5 gallons that I can do so in my garage?

So with a proper gas can, far away from water heater in garage and other precautions taken. Would you do it? I think lots of people do it but you just need that one time!!!!!!

should I check with my house insurance company as well?

NO! (rolling up newspaper) BAD!

DON'T DO THIS!

Vegas garages get to be about 110° in the summer, I have had paint cans explode in my garage
a can of gas is like storing TNT next to matches

DO NOT DO IT

Jonathan

1) It can get considerably higher than 110f if the ambient outdoor temperature is already 110f, and the sun is beating down on the metal door. I know this because this is how it works at my garage -- which doubles as my workshop; which means that I don't get much done in the summer.

2) The attic fan that I installed in the garage will cool the interior to whatever the ambient outdoor temperature happens to be. So right now, my garage is a "chilly" 110f.

Of course it's safe if stored in a safe container. Do you think Landscape companies, etc go to the gas station every time they need to fill a weed wacker or leaf blower? They keep gas on hand in small, approved use containers. I keep fuel (with stabilizer) in my garage in a purpose built gas can. No worries at all. The autoignition temp of gasoline is approximately 500 degrees. If your garage gets hot enough to autoignite (ignition by high temperature without an ignition source like spark or flame) you have bigger issues than the sealed can of gas in your garage.

Think of it this way - how is the gas in the gas tank (just a plastic or metal tank) in your car any different than gas in a sealed plastic or metal gas can on the shelf?

So lets get this right, Gasoline in a closed area, heated to 100° F - and it shares the space with an open flame...

Do you store a car, motorcycle, moped, weed wacker - anything with gas in a tank, in your garage?

Can regular latex paint stored in the original container really explode? Gooogled it to confirm and couldn't find anything. Do they catch on fire when they explode or do you just mean the lid popped off and made a mess?

yes, but not 5 gallons in a gas can...

a car, motorcycle, moped, weed wacker is designed to carry gas in a sealed environment, in harsh conditions.
a 5 gallon gas tank, is open to air and evaporation and the metal can is a great heat xfer..
lets say its an APPROVED tank, its sealed and airtight... now the garage heats and like all liquids the gas expands and
say it starts a leak under pressure, now you have gasoline shooting onto the floor, or the air in your hot garage...
then the hot gas on the hot pavement evaporates, and floats in the air and the gas hot water heater starts...
or you open your garage door electrically.

I would ONLY STORE GASOLINE in a WELL VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM ANY OPEN FLAME..

but then again, I like my house.
