I like Mountain View Hospital and think this is great for the NW area of Las Vegas.

Growing demand at MountainView Hospital prompts $90 million expansion

The project will add:
64 hospital beds total
A new Level III neonatal intensive care unit
Renovate the women’s services unit
And expand to increase labor and delivery beds to 12 and post-partum beds to 32
Expand the emergency department
A dedicated CT scanner
A larger helipad to accommodate two helicopters
An 80,000-square-foot four-story medical office building on 8.2 acres next to the hospital, which will house office suites and a 225-seat auditorium for continuing education and community outreach programs

I'm surprised they're adding more office space when they haven't filled what they have. I wish they would do more for heart patients. I have to go across town to Sunrise because my doctor says they're the only hospital that has all the emergency cardiac equipment he might need when he's in my chest.

I wondered about the additional office space as well and if any of it will be used for research as Mountain View couples with UNSOM. I know that UNSOM just shifted from their building on UMC campus to a building across the street from UMC.

Then I wondered about the new UNLV medical school eventually needing a 100 million research hospital in the future and here is Mountain View Hospital doing a 90 million dollar expansion on 8.2 acres. Meanwhile, UNLV will take over UMC as UNSOM will mostly shift to Mountain View in 2017.

The coupling of UNSOM with Mountain View for the majority of residency and fellowship positions and becoming this teaching hospital gives me some suspicions of what's to come. They did talk about Mountain View's emergency department in the article and from other articles this is their second expansion for their Emergency department.

There's also a billboard on the corner of Washington and Buffalo that tells the amount of time it takes to see someone at their ER and you can also text ER to 23000 to get the wait time. I've seen the digital number change from 3 - 12 minutes but not more than that. I wonder if they're planning to increase they're level of trauma in the future for acute critical care and bringing in more services such as emergency cardiac care equipment. On the front page of their website they have a focus on their ER, their rehabilitation services, the spine program, and their heart care center. They also mentioned in the article that they're getting new dedicated imaging equipment which is for stroke and neuro patients.

Though looking at their Heart Care Center they seem fully equipped. Out of the emergency cardiac care equipment I wonder what your doctor thinks Mountain View is missing? Heart Care Center

Awww, both of my girls were born there, despite the fact that we live in Henderson. Made for a fun labor drive!

What was it like for you at Mountain View having your babies? I was thinking of having my baby there or at Summerlin Hospital.

At 2:45 in the audio the CEO of the hospital says that the residency program will be starting July 2016 and they will be using Internal Medicine and Family Medicine for primary care there. That's an entire year ahead of schedule from what I read earlier. He also mentioned it's Interns which are first years (PGY1), and Residents which are second and third years (PGY2 and PGY3). The only residents I know shifting to Mountain View are from UNSOM. I haven't read any other programs doing that.

Today as I was driving around another thing occurred to me when I saw the UMC clinics. I wondered if Mountain View would eventually start something like that too with satellite sites because sometimes UNSOM residents rotate at those clinics in addition to the VA clinics and hospital.

I had a very good experience there both times. Of course, it helped that my OB ONLY delivered there so I didn't have much choice! What I've heard 1st hand about Summerlin is not great. Very crowded, sometimes not as clean as it should be and mistakes made with things like shots, iodine, and surly staff. This is likely because of how busy the hospital has been since it opened. That said, I've also heard from people I'm not directly friends with, that they loved their experience. I think given the nature of birth and how passionate we feel about our choices, the truth is likely somewhere in the middle. But I've only heard the extremes of each side!

Funny enough, I don't have a single other friend that has had their baby in Mountainview, so I am the lone case that I know of. Just keep in mind, that my youngest "baby" is now in 2nd grade, so many things can change in that time! Good luck with your decision. Babies are a very happy matter!

Mountain View is the closest hospital to us and it's exciting to hear that they're renovating the women's labor and delivery unit and getting a Level III NICU. One of my friends had her baby at Summerlin Hospital last year and she said she liked it because they take the baby out of the room and let the mother's rest. I was hoping for one of those birthing suites experiences where they do everything in the room and keep the baby in the room with the mother the entire time, but it sounds like Mountain View has a nursery for babies too. Is that right?

Mountainview has a nursery, but you can keep the baby with you in the suite in the bassinets they have. I kept mine with me so that they could have ample practice nursing and lots of skin to skin contact. Just made it easier. I thought I'd want to put them in the nursery, but once they were born, I didn't let them out of my sight. The feeling of euphoria was intense for me!

That's good to hear they let you keep the baby in the room with you. I've read it's better for the bonding between mother and child in those first critical hours. I'm very thankful to hear from someone with experience having their babies at Mountain View.

Yes, agreed! The bonding was a great experience for me. Now that I am all done having children, I am still learning all sorts of great things about babies. I have a few friends that are doulas. I never even knew what a doula was, when I had my girls! If you've never seen it, YouTube something called 'Baby Breast Crawl'. It will melt your heart!
