Maybe baby boomers like slots. I certainly don't. And those "arcade" style slots are targeted at people like me and I have no interest in them whatsoever.

The article doesn't make much sense to me and it starts with the title "As gamblers shun stingier slots, casinos shake things up". I didn't think "stingier" slots is the main reason why people are staying away from gambling but the fact that people want to do other things in casinos like concentrate on spending their money on dining, shows, hang at the pool, spas, local sight seeing, etc. And if the issue is truly "stingier slots", loosen them up a bit and see what happens. Try the "sell more but take less profit" approach first.

But if the main issue indeed is "stingier slots", won't the "Arcade style games" be just as stingy as the article is implying and people will shun them for the same reason, ie stingy payouts?

Just walked in the door from G2E... holy crap, there was a lot to see! Yes, there were a hundred thousand square feet of new slot machines, new table games, new variations of existing table games, etc. But there was also a TON of new technology for casinos, much of which was non-gaming related, and will carry over to other industries. There was a great live cooking competition going on that was fun to watch. And, if anyone has passes, DO NOT MISS the James Bond stage show tonight at 6. I watched them rehearse all of yesterday afternoon, and it is a must see!

Now off to get out of these dress shoes and soak my feet for a few hours.. Oh, and I physically bumped into Bill Walton.. how I didn't see the 6'11" dude prior to bumping into him, I don't quite know.. must have been the shiny lights

Is it really the type of play that discourages people to play the slot machines, or is it the lack of positive result? Maybe it's the effect of "time", but I remember 20 years ago, you could go play slots, and sit there for hours on a roll of nickels. But, you had to drop the nickels in the slot, and pull the handle, so play was "slower". And you used to get a lot of 2 coin wins..not enough to stop, but not big enough to not put it right back in.

Contrast that to today...put $5 in a machine, press the button a couple times, and either put another $5 in, or leave, all in the span of about 30 seconds.

My wife doesn't like the table games..they are intimidating to someone who doesn't know what they are doing, and we never gambled enough to "learn" them (our fault? maybe) So now that slots just eat the money as fast as you can feed them in, she has less than zero desire to play them. I somehow doubt she is alone with that line of thinking.

So what is the casino's answer to this "loss"? Make 'em stingier and take money even faster. There's not much "fun" in pushing a button and feeding paper into a machine. Not only that, we've all played "electronic" slots on our computers, and know how fast the money disappears. At least with the old mechanical style, you "felt" like they would be harder to rig.

Sometimes things past should be kept around...

There are plenty of industries that make plenty of profit and would be better for society if they collapsed. Cancer treatment, for instance. I think we can all agree it would be great if that industry was made unnecessary for want of patients.

Note: I am not suggesting prohibition for smoking and gambling. Prohibition doesn't work. Treating these industries with militant contempt DOES work, though.

Most of us don't mind losing if we get a little play. It is when you sit there and can't get any play that I get fed up and don't go back.

It's tiring being on the Las Vegas forums because no matter the subject, The negative Nancies always glom on in force and poo on everything and anything Vegas! It's old...why not just go somewhere that you like better instead of being so negative?

Personally, if casinos had arcade style games I might actually play once in awhile...I'm not a gambler but I like an exciting game here and there!

as far as skilled based games go, and targeting younger gamblers, its exactly whats happening now in the fantasy sports (especially fantasy football) websites offering cash prizes. Fan Duel and Draft Kings really raking in more money than nevada books for game wagering so far in this young football season.

It appears the slot gambling industry is up grading and modernizing their business. If a industry does not change with the times it will go under. One thing not being mentioned here is the old values that casinos have used forever making one keep looking at the slot machines and think they can win. If you look at the new modern slot machines they have huge screens bench seats with vibration and noise for the player more animated icons on the spin wheel a good example is the new Buffalo games. So get use to the change it is here for now.
