Hey there… I've been lurking in the forum for quite a while now and it looks like I haven't found some info I need, so here I go!

Currently living in Nebraska. I've been here with my family for 8 years and I really can't wait to move out. We HATE it when it starts to get cold. I've got the in-laws living in Las Vegas so we were thinking about relocating over there. My current situation? Union Crane Operator. Not a bad gig over here, but I know the pay is a little better in Local 12. I got some info about transferring to a different local but nothing detailed. My main concern is knowing how is the construction business over there? I was there last year and I saw some big buildings under construction, quite a few cranes around Las Vegas Blvd and I-15. What I don't wanna do is just move out and be on the work waiting list for months. How strong is the Union in the Southern Nevada/California area?

Pretty much, we just want to get the hell away from snow. My wife has family in Las Vegas, as well in Cali, but I think Las Vegas would be more affordable.

What do you guys think?

There are much better places, at least as far as construction work is concerned. In in NYC, and 1,000' foot tall buildings are sprouting like weeds.

In NY, the cost of living is too high. A LOT of guys out here from NY.

California and Washington state are where it's at.

Vegas has some stuff going on, BUT, there's a lot of guys unemployed. ALL the companies are down to the bare minimum guys. I'm lucky enough to still be an apprentice, thus cheap enough to keep as a core guy at the moment.

Construction won't be in good shape for at least a year.

Which, or course, is the tradeoff. But if this guy is a union crane operator, he should be able to float the CoL.

For 20 years running, the construction crane was the State bird, but now it is probably an endangered species. But we have seen a lot more construction lately. Getting on a union call list may or may not be difficult. Call the union and ask them.

Are you an apprentice in Local 12? maybe you can give me more info on their entire package deal. They didnt tell me much when I called. Are you currently working or still in the work list? I thought there was a shortage of crane operators nationwide

What crane companies are union over there? I think the biggest are Jake's and Dielco?

thanks for the reply

No, I'm in local 1977. I'm a carpenter.

No one's building anything tall right now. There's very few cranes running in town. I've been doing this a year, on 4 sites, and there's been 2 cranes for a total of 1.5 days.
