Hi there I'm live near Venice beach and crime is an issue here. Planning to buy in either The lakes or Desert shore. My husband and I are pretty active people. Wanted to know your opinion. We would be buying something near the lake side of town. Thanks!

here is current crime map:
CrimeMapping.com - National Map

the link says "national" but it will zoom into the las vegas area after a moment, then you can move the map to the specific area you're interested. change the dates and/or resize the icons if wanted.

I'm in The Lakes. There seems to be a recent uptick in property crime, but looking at the last three months, I don't really see a significant difference between Desert Shores and The Lakes. You do need to filter out all the crime that occurs on the main roads (Durango, Desert Inn, Sahara, which I don't consider to be inside The Lakes), otherwise it may skew the results.

There were a couple recent items here that made the news. One was a hit-and-run of a five year old child after school let out (walking with her teenage brother IIRC) by a woman in a red Chevy Aveo whose description sounded like another parent who had just picked up her child. Great example she's setting for her child. News reports said she stopped, looked back, said "I'm sorry", then drove off. The victim had serious injuries to her leg.

The second was a homicide that started as a domestic dispute, and ended with a guy holding onto the hood of a moving car, then falling off and getting run over by the same car. Both of these events occurred on the side of The Lakes east of Ft Apache.

We used to live right on the border of Venice and Santa Monica. Trust me, either neighborhood you choose is going to be a dramatic improvement over Venice Beach.

Those are not considered high crime areas, but crime can occur anywhere. Those are both very nice parts of town. I wish we had bought in Desert Shores on a lake when they first built them, but we are more than happy with our present home not far from Desert Shores (just love the look of those lakes). By the way, crime can happen anywhere? Out neighbor, a metro police lieutenant, was burglarized not long ago. This is a gated community too, semi-expensive to kind of expensive homes, with some McMansions surrounding us. Stuff happens.

Both are quite nice and an order of magnitude lower crime than Venice Beach.

There is lots of people around all the time in both...I prefer Desert Shores for the water but off water I would think they are about the same. Some areas of both are gated as well if the is of interest. Joggers and walkers are around at all hours.

The only disadvantage I see is the lots in Desert Shores are tight. The acreage that makes up the lakes was clearly obtained by squeezing the parcel size. There are places with reasonable lot sizes at the high end.

Thank you this is really helpful everyone! Good to know.. I live in Marina Del Rey.. but on the border of washington and lincoln..which is Venice Beach.. we get all kinds of riff raft nearby and we always find syringes and knives in our back drive way... lots of easy ways for people to walk around our alleys.. and do drugs...

We just got our offer accepted in Desert Shores.. super excited to move to some peace and quite!! I'll do the same thing I did here in LA.. buy cameras and ADT installed.. and put my little sign that says "smile you're on camera" out in the front.. it's worked here.. in LA.. I'm sure it will work at Desert Shores!

You'll like Desert Shores. Be sure to try Marche Bauccaus for some wine and a meal on the lake. I used to work in the area. There are lots of dining options nearby, it's also convenient to shopping and the freeways.

We rented right at the intersection of the lakes for 2 years Fort Apache/Sahara. When we started looking for a house, we wanted exactly in the lakes area. Alas, banks wouldnt consider my wife's job which is mostly tips so we had to settle for something else. Point is, its a great area and we never had issues crime. The proximity to everything is probably the best part about it. Trader Joes, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Target, Boca Park, Tivoli Village and Downtown Summerlin along with 3 casinos all within a 5 minute drive is what I miss most. Good dining especially in Tivoli and Downtown Summerlin in that area And youre not too far from anything else in the city.

I saw that Marche Bauccaus is a really good place.. I'm excited to go there.. my husband and I love to ride bikes so it will be great to visit there.. it will be a little different having casinos so easily accessible for us.. I can see it being fun.. just playing once and awhile.. were not really gamblers at all. But yes being near great shopping sounds amazing!
