In my mind, I was thinking a guest who stays overnight in the hotel, pays the resort fee nonsense along with the room charge wouldn't have to pay this parking fee. But after reading the ap story posted a few days back, I think I'm wrong on that assumption as it mentions charging for "overnight self-parking":

The Latest: Cosmopolitan says no parking fees like MGM

"Casino giant MGM announced hours earlier that it will start charging up to $10 for overnight self-parking at most of its properties."

We drive to Las Vegas and enjoy staying at the 5 star properties once in a while, the Aria and the Bellagio in particular, and I know this....if they do indeed start charging paying hotel room guests staying at their hotel a parking fee, on principal alone as we can certainly afford it, we won't be giving these resorts/any of the mgm properties our business anymore.

I would park a couple miles away and walk before I would valet my car. I also used to go to Fremont almost exclusively for the people watching, not to eat or gamble. As long as I can't do that for free any longer, I don't go. I am sure I am just the kind of person that they didn't want and a large part of why they started charging for parking. Park for free and not spend a dime on the FSE but still get a couple hours of entertainment value.

As far as MGM properties go, I have tickets for Garth Brooks at Las Vegas Arena and Journey/Doobie Brothers at Mandalay Bay later this year. If I can't park for free in an MGM lot I will park elsewhere and walk. But the chances of me buying any future show tickets on an MGM property are pretty much slim to none. Not that I am opposed to paying for parking in general. I pay for parking all over Southern California. It is just that "that is the way it has always been" so I am cool with it. I am not cool with suddenly paying for something that up until now was always free.

Yeah, I am becoming the same curmudgeon that my dad was.

Unfortunately this is true. The next big news story will come along and people will forget about this and just pay it. But I most surely will not pay.

Hard to know what the impact will be but time will tell. I'm guessing many people who fly in and stay at the strip hotels get uber/taxis/shuttles from the airport to the casino so they won't be impacted by this. Same with many flying in for conventions. But perhaps some that considered renting a car won't so maybe car rentals might be negatively impacted but again, hard to say. I think the people driving in from neighboring states like AZ and CA would be the demographic most likely to balk. It will also be interesting if the other casinos on the strip follow eventually or decide to use "free parking" as a lure to differentiate themselves from the competition.

Just like downtown, they will ALL be doing it soon. Then there won't be any option, and it will become "the way it is". I haven't visited downtown in years because of the pay for parking, and once the strip goes that way, I won't visit there either. However, I spend less than $50/year gambling, so they aren't worried if I'm there or not. As part of our move to live in Las Vegas, we were pretty excited about the entertainment options offered by the casinos. As I think paying for parking is a rip off, we will just be extremely selective on what we do go to. We've lived a long time without that option, so it won't be that big of a deal to us.

I just did a show at the Westgate. They have the gates and ticket machines in place, although they haven't started using them in the garage yet. I spoke to one of the event sales managers, and they said they are going to a "pay to park" model as well.

Ya... wtf is a resort fee really. I mean I know. It's like going to the car wash and paying your 5 for your wash, but they if you wanna exit the car wash and lower the spike strips you need to pay a water fee. The would never happen .

The resort fee is a way to increase prices without that price increase showing up in the price shown on the aggregate websites. It's also a way to make additional money directly from guests on rooms sold in bulk, at a discount, to the aggregators. The parking fee is not much different.

Where there is a difference is that it effects different groups of customers differently. The local and drve-ins from CA are not going to be happy. Initially, they'll slosh over to casinos that keep the free patking. The question is, will those casinos prefer the extra guests vs the higher per guest revenue from the parking fees.

Eventually the resorts will run out of premium guests. Every time they raise rates they lose a few of the "less desirables" as some call them. As they keep doing this, the desirable base shrinks to nothing.

Stop nickle and diming our golden goose.
