So I just came across the website Transparent Nevada, that list the names and salaries of public employees. Some of them are jaw dropping. I know people sparr about how much folks get paid, but I'm kinda speechless. Is this a website to be trusted, do you think? I mean a UNR Assoc. Professor that makes over $1 million. What am I missing here?

My experience is the site is accurate (on the Utah version) - though typically a year or two behind in updates. Most of my family, including myself and my wife, were gov employees and the site did give the correct S & B totals when we were active.

Transparent NV is accurate. The big numbers though are often the use of strategies to inflate final salaries for the purpose of inflating pensions. For instance you get paid out for 15 years worth of leave you did not take earlier.

Not approving of the tactic. They should be outlawed but you may not be able to change them for current employees.

That assoc professor you mentioned is actually a plastic surgeon for the school of medicine. He is also a professor but is earning the school millions of dollars performing all types of plastic surgeries. He is a full on doctor who is teaching residents in addition to doing all the things a regular plastic surgeon does.

Is that worth a million bucks? I don't know, but he isn't a plain ol' professor either.

Actually, as it turns out, he died in July. There is a new guy in charge:

Dean Thomas Schwenk Dean Thomas Schwenk: Dean's Office: University of Nevada School of Medicine

Thanks for clarifying that. Now at least I know what all of the mumbo jumbo next to his name indicates.

These number can be skewered big time by termination payouts. Sometimes an additional years salary can be banked over the course of 30 years and those employees are completely entitled to it at retirement. Others are death benefits being paid to the estate of those employees. I'm not saying there arent abusers of OT and other improprieties, but you can't look at this list's first pages and think it's rosy for all public servants or that they all abuse the system.

Not until you see names start repeat, then you've actually found the biggest culprits because this is an accumulation of many many years and if someones name appears mutliple times, they are hauling in big money year in and year out(In NY it's usually police and massive overtime), not just at the time of retirement or death.
