"safe" isn't exactly the same as "non-lethal."

But that doesn't fit well with the fantasy some people have killing an intruder.

Some of us would like to be prepared so as not to be at the mercy of an intruder.

The dogs really do help. I went a decade rarely locking my doors, even when I wasn't home, with no problems. It used to make a former friend of mine who was from NYC insane. My neighborhood was very low crime and quiet.

The only time I ever got ripped off was when a drug addled family member came over. You just never know. You can go years with no issues, and then a crew starts working your area....

What's a good solution to the back glass sliding door?

I've seen bars installed in the front windows and door that the neighbor installed - but what keeps burglars out, keeps you in during an emergency.

The security screen door that MacGeek has installed at his place is the only thing I'd trust. But they're spendy.

This solution won't work for me because the screen unacceptably blocks the view. And besides the slider, I have two giant picture windows -- all with $1 million views of the Strip. All it would take is a tweaker with a hammer to get in.

But if you don't care what happens to the view, this will keep out anyone who doesn't have a plasma cutter (or light saber) handy.

Eventually, you have to make peace with the fact that an armed home-invasion (the kind of crime that people are so timid about) is unbelievably rare. If you're going to be the victim of that kind of crime, it is statistically likely that you already know your potential assailant.

Replace the Slider with a french door that has hurricane glass and a multipoint lock mechanism. This WILL NOT be cheap. But it's probably the most secure type of glass door you can have.

Same basic problem as my sliding doors (I have three of them). A tweaker with a hammer is all it takes. If MacGeek feels comfortable discussing his system, I'm sure he will.
