it gets really confusing down there, all the streets change names, actually that describes most of Las Vegas, lol...

How rude HulaDog! I grew up in NY, lived in LA for 50 years and now in Kingman and I called one deli and they had no idea what a knish was. I give up. Oh how I miss Langers corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, their knishes and going even further back in time, the best rum cake I ever had. Is there no place near Kingman where I can find some real deli food???

Just found my first post.. and it was to a day old thread. However, I feel like a dufus that my first post was in a Summerlin vs. Henderson thread

"We just stayed with friends in Anthem and it was very, very nice. The planes were there, but the noise was not atrocious. Houses were very nice, neighborhoods seemed fairly quiet. We're planning our move there at the end of the Summer provided my wife can transfer credits to the local college. We're looking in Anthem as well as a few neighborhoods in Henderson. I toured Summerlin as well, and I think being 30-somethings we will feel more at home in Henderson."

How does one go about finding their first post? Would be interesting to read what idiocy I came up with all those years ago.

Edit: Found it.

Quote:
If you don't mind freezing yer tail off in the winter and sweltering in the summer go to the Des Moines, IA area. You will find there:

A job - especially if you're in insurance (3rd largest # of insurance companies in the world). Wells Fargo employs thousands of people here and they are building a new "campus" that will, I think, employ 3-4 thousand more.

A vibrant city - well, West Des Moines and the other 'burbs are. DSM proper is going to the dogs. They can't seem to figure out a direction. Check out the crime rate for DSM and West DSM here on City Data.

A fairly high cost of living. Again insurance companies - their execs make big bucks.

Ethanol at every gas station (not E85 yet, but soon)

Oh,yeah tolerance. No problem there. You'll get the occasional Neanderthal, but most folks here just don't mind the influx of the people from all over the world we've seen. Like a variety of food? Pick one and you will find it here. Different skin color? So what? Different religion? Don't care. Meth head? I would advise you to stay where you are. Iowa makes a lot of money arresting them, throwing them in jail and keeping all their property. The state passed a series of bills requiring everyone to sign for cold medicines. Been working too.

that is "artsy" and tolerant, someplace where we can buy a house and walk out our front door to a little downtown area with restaurants and shops, etc., yet still be near a metro area

That would be Valley Junction: the original West Des Moines. Fits your description to a tee. Shops of all kinds, restaurants, Thursday Farmers Market all summer, something going every weekend, music, art festivals, you name it. Metro area? 10 minutes to downtown DSM and about the same to the big mall (Jordan Creek) in West DSM. Airport is fairly close. Lakes, a ton of bike trails, Civic Center for symphonies and shows, a brand new library (both DSM and WDM), a new events Center. Good fishing, hunting, boating.

Excellent medical facilities in DSM. Ames, IA is 30 minutes north. Read up on the university there if you don't understand the reference. Gambling, while not on the scale of Nevada, is available.

I'm out of typing time. In case you haven't figured it out I'm a fan. With that said I should tell you I'm leaving when I retire. Too cold and too hot. Going to sell my snow blower on the way out of town. If the weather was better I'd stay.

Oh, taxes are a bit high here. You get what you pay for.

Good luck with your search.

Yet if someone created their own pastrami thread, someone would admonish them for not using the search function.

You can't win I tell ya!
