This "Wal-Mart Person" will too. Well, as long as I can find a groupon or some other such deal that will get me that $100 steak, $10 Potato and $15 side for 1/2 off.

I have been coming to Las Vegas for around 45 years and have now lived here for 20.

My earlier years I have little view of anything but the strip and the convention center. In fact for many of them we flew home most nights. Did get to stay in a number of the whale suites and villas..but mostly spent 2AM to 7AM at most in them.

I would note it is an entirely different model from 30 or 40 years ago and that is, I think, to the good. The model now makes its money from all of the branches of the strip where in the old days gaming paid the way and everything else was a loss leader. I never really gambled so I found it great...cheap food, cheap drinks and cheap entertainment. I was however generally to busy to really enjoy it. Make get to have a meal and a couple of drinks before going home but that was the height of enjoying Las Vegas.

Las Vegas needs to grow more and complete the strip...maybe half again or even twice what it is now. It is its size and scope that makes it supreme in its market. You simply cannot find any where else where so much is packed into a confined area.

Sure some more diversification would be nice. And I would love to beef up UNLV. But that can occur and be supported by the strip and its growth.

What we need is to perfect the strip. Piece by piece and thing by thing. That is the muscle of LV.

The most my wife and I have spent for dinner is $275..... The most I have EVER spent for dinner was when I was a young person and NOT married.. Went with my GF and 2 other couples and ending up spending roughly $2300 for dinner thanks to one of the girls ordering a bottle of wine that was $250 a glass and NOT $250 a bottle......

I think part of the reason that the casinos love their resort fees is because Nevada charges room taxes, and I could be wrong about this, but I think they are based in part on the room rate. Keep the room rate low, pay less in taxes?

Just one more way to screw the locals. They (MGM ) can't even stand for the valet drivers to make a good living, they have to take that money, too. I have very strong opinions on MGM and Harrahs ( they call themselves Caesars now, but it's an investor owned mess of creative bookkeeping that used to be Harrahs). Those opinions aren't printable here.

Occupancy Tax/Room Tax rate in Nevada is 12%. Part of that 12% is the sales tax. Cities across the United States charge room tax and as far as resort fee that is just another tactic for resort to make extra money. Other amenities offered for free in the past like internet connection, gym/fitness .....are now package as part of the #Resort Fee.

Room rate is based on occupancy level and demand [weekend, holidays, special occassions...]

Room Tax and Resort Fee are independent of each other. Resorts can charge whatever they want on Resort Fee or withhold Resort Fee regardless of the Room Tax.

Does the $69 include the resort fee? If not, you're not paying $69.

And so, as I suggested, resort fees are not taxed at the 12% rate. That's a win/win for the resorts. Goose the search and booking engines, and screw the state out of room taxes.

Makes you wonder what the deal is with non-gaming revenue as well. We tax gaming, and rooms, but I'm not sure that the revenue generated from the clubs, restaurants, and leasing of high end shopping space is treated the same way. Wouldn't it be nice if our lawmakers took a look at this instead of bending over for Berkshire Hathaway ( NV Energy ), MGM and Caesars?

Here's a solution:

Since the resorts measure EVERYTHING by revenue per square foot, let's TAX them based on revenue per square foot.
