More like 90 years. I've been here nearly 52 years and have heard this same stuff from newbies ever since. It has always been considered the entertainment capital of the world and I don't see that changing much. With 42 million visitors last year, almost all of them heard about us because of gaming. Maybe they don't gamble much, but I bet nearly all of them at least put a few quarters in a slot machine now and then. But 42 million people have 42 million reasons for coming. Most of them think they can beat the house. Don't forget, "entertainment" also means gambling, and we aren't about to turn Vegas over to a bunch of kids who don't know what they're talking about. Gambling is the second oldest profession. It's not going anywhere. Before we reached our first half million residents, there was more illegal gambling in the City of New York than there was legal gambling in Nevada. I doubt if the NYC numbers are any less, but we are a lot bigger now.

Also, I would remind the OP that if you are a serious person who doesn't want to become an alcoholic, you wouldn't spend every day on the Strip drinking. And, unless you don't need to work for a living, you will probably have yo find a job. And they won't keep you if you all you do is hang out on the Strip drinking. There is just so much more to do in Las Vegas, and the surrounding area (surrounding area here is at least 300 miles) than the Strip which is, except for special occasions, for the most part, for tourists. Plus, the beautiful women that you meet on the Strip will eat you alive. I you want to meet beautiful women that you wouldn't mind taking home to mother, they live normal lives.

If the casinos thought that they could run on pool parties and day clubs they wouldn't install slots and game tables and poker rooms. What has happened is that the casinos can charge upwards of $500+ for table service at the clubs and rip you young tourists off with the price of drinks. Seriously, you won't see many locals at the Strip as they would be homeless if they spent every day doing what the tourists do. My adult children come down and don't gamble much but they spend their hard earned money on restaurants and drinks and then return to their jobs to save up to come down here again for a few days. Us, we're retired snowbirds, we have a gambling budget...I play poker tournies as you are then playing against the players, not the house and occasionally throw some money in the slots. Spent $7 a few years back in a 25 cent progressive red/white/blue sevens slot machine and hit the progressive of $12,000. Sometimes it is worth throwing some extra money in a slot instead of spending $12 on a drink and tossing that money to clubs!!

Poker tournaments are an outstanding option for retirees. You know what to budget because your cost is fixed, skill level is not as important as it is in cash games(tournaments have a higher rate of luck involved esp the ones that have high blind to chip ratio and 20/30 minute levels like most low buy in tournaments feature, and drinks are still free if you are so inclined. It's def a good value option, and when you get lucky you win hundreds or even a few thousand dollars.
