It doesn't matter what causes bad driving, it needs to be stopped. If you have eyes forward and both hands on the wheel, but can't stay in your lane, you need stopped. 5 million wrecks, 13,000 murders. Need a lot more of the police force concentrating on bad drivers.

I never use the phone while driving and I wait 5 seconds at a green light. Where came from it was mandatory, and it seems to be the same here.

Wait or Die.

'79 Saab. Dark blue. Best highway car we've ever owned, and fun to drive! "If you own one you are the only one in the neighborhood" was a line I heard soooo many times.

5 seconds is quite a long time. Some lights here you'd be waiting until it already turned red.

Yup - at some times of day he will never make the left at Del Webb and Rampart...a turn he will on occasion care about. I have seen that damn light change in 5 seconds many times in light traffic.

Used it yesterday. By the time I got to the intersection I was close to ten.

Count out 5 seconds right now and consider that's AFTER the light has already turned green...a long time, no?

...and with the amount of texters at the light unaware of it changing to green, people behind would assume that 5 seconds will turn to 7, 9, 10, etc. as the person in front of them appears to be preoccupied.

Hear the horn much?

I've never heard of mandatory "wait 5 seconds" before going at an intersection. I was behind one today, though. They ran a red light at one intersection to get in front of me, then sat too long at the next almost causing us both to miss the light.

Of course it is smart to look both ways once the light turns green to make sure it is clear, but 5 seconds is a long time.

It makes less than zero sense...why ADD to the traffic problem caused by the horrible traffic lights around here? If it's green, you look both ways, and then go. Otherwise, it wouldn't be GREEN (which means "go") and instead would be RED (which means "don't go")

Driving isn't hard, you just have to pay attention, and look beyond the end of your hood. Unfortunately, that is a pretty tough concept for what seems like a lot of people. I for one am sure looking forward to self-driving cars, as hopefully the computer will be smarter than the average joe driver. And it will allow the cops to be allocated to important things, like solving REAL crimes, and maybe even assigned to shifts that help prevent it, instead of generating revenue by hiding in the bushes.
