Hey guys I will be moving to Las Vegas in June. The start date for my job is my choice but I have to start by July 1st but can start earlier.

I have a good list of apartments in the Summerlin area and or Spring Valley area. I will be working on West Charleston Blvd on the west side of town. I have come across many apartment complexes within 15 minutes of my work. Since I have not physically visited these complexes I am not sure how they are but was wondering if you had any recommendations. I am willing to spend up to 1000 a month, looking for a 2 bedroom unit. While there are a lot of nice looking apartments I have read reviews that some complexes have issues with safety or have tenants that are very loud etc.

The other major question is when I should fly into town to physically look at my top choices. I can go in a few weeks in the middle of April or wait until the middle of May. My concern with either option is if April is too early of May is too late, I do see there is a lot available so am not sure if going later would ensure there are not a lot of choices. In the past I go early but I have lived in areas with a lot less choices compared to Las Vegas. My desired move in date would be sometime in the first week or two weeks of June.

Thank you so much!

IMHO, nothing replaces going there physically and seeing the place (or places). You can get the vibe of the place and the surrounding area.

As for noise, I think it's a bit of a crap shoot and you may not be able to figure out if it's an issue until you've moved in. I ended up renting a house in an attempt to get some peace and quiet.

Also, pay close attention to how the apt. management treats you and any residents you meet during the tour. You are going to be dealing with the apt. management for a year or more and an unprofessional team can really make your life more difficult that it needs to be.

As for the timing of your trip, maybe you can call a couple of the apt. complexes you are contemplating and see what they recommend.

I would rent a house in Spring Valley before an apartment in Summerlin. Your housing dollar will buy more in Spring Valley.

You will likely discover that the "nice" areas of Las Vegas are so homogeneous that the exact neighborhood hardly matters. My usual comment is that the neighborhoods here look like they were whacked with a clone stick. It's like comparing Fox News TV hosts -- they're all essentially clones of each other. (But you cannot compare the nice areas of Las Vegas to the squalid areas. And often the two adjoin.)

Since you're renting (and I wouldn't if I could avoid it), it really doesn't matter. Rent a house in a quiet section of Spring Valley and live there until you're ready to buy somewhere. It's central. And the people who live there tend to like it. (If they like Las Vegas in the first place. That's the big hurdle. If you don't like this city, no neighborhood is going to matter very much.)

The earlier you look the better. Most people move during the summer months (June-August).

The further west down Charleston you look, the better the demographics are. Check out a complex called Silver Pines, these are condos in the center of Summerlin. 2 bedrooms are going for 900-1000/mo.

I typically recommend condos to apartments because when people have equity at stake, they tend to keep the community in better condition. Most condo complexes in Las Vegas, however, have a low percentage of owner occupants.

The basics are reasonably simple. In general the longest delay before you move in is a month. And often only two weeks. So if you go in April you will have to take possession May 1. If Mid May you take possession June 1.

You can of course see complexes in April but you will not see a unit that will be available to you in June.

I agree with the 08grad...condos or even a small house will work out better most of the time. Condos tend to be quieter have some owner occupants and are generally better built...read that as more sound proof.
