Default Some more info on this subject

* Lake Mead Water Levels

Lake-Mead-2006 (http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/Lake-Mead-2006.html - broken link)

EO Study: Drought Lowers Lake Mead

The level is up almost 6' since October. Not what we need, but its a start. You can see by the charts, its been down before. A lot less people in the valley then.

If that ever happened, it would not only affect So. Nevada, but Socal and Arizona. I really think that idea of piping water from the northern NV counties is a good idea. There is a lot of water there and no much people. Basically, if Las Vegas fails due to lack of water, then it hurts a lot of people in other parts of the SW.

Default The Colorado River Snow Pack is at 131% of verage

The Colorado River snowpack as of 12 February 2008 is at 131% of average according to the National Resources Conservation Service SNOTEL data. See ftp-fc.sc.egov.usda.gov/CO/Snow/snow/watershed/daily/co_update_snow.pdf.

The drought report is a few months out of date.

Also it is important to note that the level of Lake Mead is completely managed. If they closed the gates, it would fill back up. Over the years it has gone up and down, mostly driven by contracts defining water deliveries. To determine drought by looking at a "bath tub line" marking the highest the water has ever been is ludicrous.

It is also well to note that the Colorado is mostly used for agriculture. Something over 80%. That water is actually sold quite cheaply and could easily be redirected to city use. Such sales however are not allowed.

So change the rules and the problem goes away. Probably buy up enough rights to add a million acre feet for a under 500 million dollars. The tube from the north to supply Las Vegas will cost 5 times that for 10% that much water.

The fixes to this one are in the government...not nature.

Lake Mead would go dry?!? I can't believe it. Will this severely ruin L.A., S.D. and L.V.? I have a feeling that it will.

Well my opinion, it won't happen. They are going to build the pipelines to up northeast Nevada which feed Las Vegas more water, plus.... HELLO, it's still Feburary and still a winter in Colorado which the snow haven't melt yet! There are more water coming to Lake Mead soon probably this spring or summer.

Check this out, it show how much snows left in Colorado (which Colorado still have about 48 inches of snow around) and whole of US map.

Regional Map : Weather Underground

So naw, it ain't going to happen. Las Vegas do need more water, but doesn't mean that Lake Mead will be gone, it's just that Las Vegas need more water sources like the pipelines from Northeast Nevada to Las Vegas.

Btw, I am really highly concern with the global warming too, but I just know that Lake Mead will not be gone.

Bingo. If Lake Mead goes, it's going to be the least of our probs - there'd be a world of hurt out there.

They'll change the laws and water rights before they let it happen. I'm not worried.

I remember a few times when the lake was so full they had to open the spillways. Quite a show and not that long ago - the lake is has a cyclical life.
