It seems like many jobs in Vegas are considered on call. My question is how do people make any type
of long term planning not really having any employment stability? With all the new and proposed projects coming such as T-Mobile and the proposed new stadium there is going to be a need for employees which most probably will be on call.

Back in the old days the employees should have the strength and collectiveness to say hey wait a minute. Not today. What's a union?

They don't.

And it's hard to get a union going when the employers can just tell the employees who want to organize to screw off and hire any of the ten potential newbies who want each available job.

Having belonged to the union, 2 of them in fact I seldom felt they were working for us. Thier #1 job is promoting the union which they would not have to do if they worked for the members first

You don't have a life! And you can plan exactly nothing. You never know when you will be working and you don't know how much money you will make either. It's a double whammy! You don't know if you can afford groceries OR have the time to go get them!

I know quite a few people trying to make a living on cobbled together part time, on call jobs. Most of them work more than 60 hours a week for slave wages and no benefits. No time off either.

He likes the flexibility from what he tells me

That isn't the purpose of On-Call jobs.

On-Call jobs are meant for people to pick up additional income. Just like when you sign up for an employment agency sometimes they call you for a day and sometimes they don't. Sometimes the work is stuffing envelopes for a few hours and other times it's more permanent.

On-Call jobs are meant to be in addition to a company's regularly scheduled workers as their individual demand changes such as inventory or seasonality.

It's funny you guys in Nevada keep voting that corrupt Harry Reid back into office whereby he even USES THE UNIONS to rig elections but never really represents the interests of workers.

It's also the current administration who forced the employer to adhere to a NEW set of laws making a much shorter work week "full time" to get Obamacare forced on the employers. We all heard Mr. Gruber brag about how stupid Americans are and that we wouldn't even notice what they were doing against their own interests with Obamacare.

You can't have it both ways.

WHICH, BTW the unions are guilty of, too. They were ALL FOR OBAMACARE until it presented a problem for their Cadillac benefits. THEN they wanted an EXEMPTION! OUTRAGEOUS.

I feel this is the common norm here in Nevada. To avoid having to give benefits to their employees. For me to say I know people that's living like this, is a understatement.... This is the state's biggest issue I see, is too many part time jobs or "on-call" This is America and 2016.

The government has made creating full time jobs too expensive for employers, so when they need work done, they get a couple of part timers. This is what happens when you squeeze Jello.

Next look for automation to replace a lot of the back of the house jobs.

We should hold a telethon to raise donations for the poor billionaire casino owners who can't afford to pay their workers a living wage. Or maybe give that slavery thing another try. Make America great again!

exactly... thats how Obozo can say he lowered the unemployment percentage. Alot of companies don't even hire fulltime anymore. why should they? business gets slow... part timers get 10hrs a week. If they were fulltimers, they would be getting a minimum of 30hrs a week.
