as i kid, i always helped mom - grocery shopping was a bore to me, so if i helped out, we'd get out of the store quicker. of course that was back in the day where kids were allowed to walk to/from various places without getting snatched.

The amount of food grocery stores are forced to throw away over liability issues is astounding. Using some of it before it spoils the way they are is not only generous but a good business decision as well. I remember the Walmart where I used to live had a regular parade of people going to the back of the store to collect the thrown away food.

They don't get snatched now, either. It's an artifact of the Internet and the 24 hour news cycle that we hear, and are afraid of, the rare stuff that went on back in the day, but we never heard about it because it was 3000 miles away.

Most kids are "kidnapped" by one of the parents.

Yeah, I envisioned a parody where an, um ~39 year old is happily eating a bit of fruit next to a content mid-60s pushing the grocery cart. Bonus points if 39er is sitting in the cart. :-)

Following week, 39er and mid-60s are both munching and a wry/spry ~90ist is holding both their hands.
Still room for a few more generations...

Better Call Saul is on the speed dial if needed.

Yes, but media alarmism has been around forever. I remember the population bomb of 1968, the impending ice age of 1974, the great swine flu epidemic of 1976, the SARS epidemic of 2002, and other disasters that never happened.

While huge stories could sweep the nation back then, it's nothing compared to how fast and wide news spreads today. Even trivial news. Every time a Kardashian tweets something, it's trending on my facebook page.
