For a long time Vegas catered to cheapskates.

Lately, it's trying not to. But is doing it in a sleezy, disingenuous way (not raising banner prices, but slapping fees on various services/items that were previously included.) So far this has worked for them. One wonders how long that will continue.

As I've been saying all along, Vegas has too much capacity to only market to high end customers. That's why it felt it had to market to the cheapskates. Things have been pretty good since the end of the 2008 implosion. If there's another one, they'll be courting the cheapskates to fill rooms again.

I was under the impression that things were not good for casinos until just very recently, and as a whole, the major players only turned an overall profit in fiscal 2016

In the newspaper today, they covered the effect on the Valet's with the increased Valet fees, and it was reported that, oftentimes, the Valet area of the parking garage is half-empty, and the Valet's are unhappy, a few even taking a 2nd job to supplement the lost income from tips, and most who were interviewed were very tight-lipped, not surprisingly, fearful of losing their jobs if they spoke out.

I can say with utter confidence that MGM management could care less what the valets think. The valet staff aren't even MGM employees anymore.

But in the bigger picture MGM has earned itself a lot of bad will with this policy. At some point the is going to blow up on them.

Also in the paper today, a Letter to the Editor. Some senior citizen decided to treat some out-of-town guests to a dinner at one of the MGM properties on the Strip, and she was only there 2-3 hours.

Well, she lost that ticket you receive when entering the parking ramp, and tried hard to convince the parking attendant she had only been there for a couple hours with out of town friends, and the attendant charged her the whole day's rate of $30!!! The rules, apparently, if you lost your ticket!

Well, you can imagine her response!

"You will never see me on the Las Vegas Strip again!"

But, at Caesar's properties, it's free for locals, you only need to swipe your driver's license as you leave! And there's still free parking at Treasure Island, Venetian, Tropicana Hotel, Hooters.

I bet MGM is thankful that the United Airlines incident has captured the news cycle.
