Great call in radio show right now (KNPR 88.9FM) - a wealth of desert gardening information. I'm sure State of Nevada will post the show recording for streadming / listening later.

I've been watering my lawn at the wrong times! Caller said something about his newly sodded backyard lawn not doing well in spots. Norm said don't water at night or early morning (before sunrise I think), and the guy said that's what I'm doing. Well, that's what I'm doing too. Will fix that in a minute or two.

One caller had aphid problems on an outdoor (potted?) plant. Norm and Angela both gave negative views on insecticides, and Norm recommended lacewings from rinconvitova, or lady bugs.

Just curious, what time of day do they advise that you water your lawn?

Morning - when the sun is out. So I checked the SNWA site and set our 3 times from around 6am to 9:30am.

I've had some great luck planting stuff this year. Even in the dead of summer. Mulching around plants helps tremendously. As does shielding new plants from excessive sunlight the first couple of weeks after planting. After that deep watering every 2-3 days works well.

They posted the one hour program on their site: With Fall Coming, Here's How Not To Kill Your Plants.

They'll also rebroadcast at 7pm tonight.

I was told this back in the 60s so my memory could be flawed, but they said that watering at night causes mold, mildew, rot or something in the grass.

I just let my gardener kill my plants. I have nothing to do with it. I'm innocent.
