Hi!
I wonder if public transportation does exist in LV.I am planning to move there and find a place in low-crime area (I hear they do exist!), not too far away from the strip. The thing is, I hate driving (no wonder why:I live in NYC!) and would do my best to avoid buying a car anywhere I live, therefore a safe and reliable 24/7 public transportation (i.e city buses, private vans and buses, etc) is what I am looking for.So my question is: does such a thing exist: safe, fast and reliable public transportation in Las Vegas? If so,how developed it is?

Any help is much appreciated!

"safe, reliable?" ...eh

Have you checked out the RTC (broken link) website?

CAT (broken link)

DEUCE (broken link) ...operates on the Strip 24/7. Great service headway even in the middle of the night.

MAX (broken link) ...Operates downtown through North LV to Nellis. A bus that's like a train.

Silver Star (broken link) ...para-transit vans

Monorail ...MGM Grand to the Sahara

Wow! I really like that "train-bus"...Thanks for the info! It looks like Vegas has pretty modern bus fleet and it is possible to survive without a car!

You can probably "survive" without a car but like most west coast cities, Las Vegas is car oriented. Things are changing quickly in places like the Bay Area and L.A. but Las Vegas along with other western cities like Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, etc., have a long way to go before you could even come close to comparing them with the big east coast cities as far as transportation goes. Most people will own cars in these cities.

Good luck in using public transportation in Las Vegas. I sure hope it's going to work out for you.

Survive- sure. Really enjoy living in LV- not really. Unlike NYC where you can hop a bus or subway and basically get dropped within a few blocks max of whatever destination you're heading to, in LV you'll be restricted to the major thoroughfares, and you'll have a much less flexible schedule. You're also likely to find that many of the buses don't have much/any service on the off hours/weekends, so you'll be stuck at those times.

Now, this doesn't mean that you couldn't set yourself up so that you live fairly close to work and both live and work within reasonable distance of a bus stop- it's just going to take far more forethought than it would in NYC, and you're likely to have to make a lot of compromises.

Comparing NYC's public transportation system to Las Vegas' would be like comparing apples to toothpicks...there is no comparison except to say that in each city, the busses do use rubber tires. The monorail is not convenient (stations are on one side of the strip and behind it) and sometimes has mechanical problems and serves to basically connect a group of casinos (no access to airport, or connection to any kind of central hub.)

I think since I dont have a regular job (I work from home) and stay mostly in the neighborhood, walking my dog or hanging in the park with my laptop (I am a web designer) this (not having a car) could still work for me.If I choose to go to the strip for a little fun, I can always use cab,if there are no buses around.Plus,I am a young female, so finding a bf with a car wont take long, if need be

I'd try zip code 89147. There are some good neighborhoods within walking distance to shopping while still being relatively safe. It's also along major bus lines @ Flamingo, Rainbow, and Spring Mtn.

Is that to say you'd be using a guy for his car? If a great guy came your way and didn't have a car, would you exclude him as a bf?
