Hi guys,

Will be moving to Las Vegas in the next month or so...

I'm trying to lock down the best place for a single guy who wants to be near the action (ie...the strip), but not living right on it.

I've heard Spring Hill around chinatown is a conveniently located spot. But I've also heard downtown on freemont st. is the up-and-coming area.

Thoughts?

Spring Hill? Do you mean Spring Valley? That's nowhere near Chinatown. Nothing wrong with Spring Valley, but it's standard suburban Las Vegas.

Downtown LV isnt like a normal downtown in other big cities. I would check it out first to see if thats what you want. Otherwise Spring Valley is a better base location for all things around Las Vegas

You need to come look. The Fremont St. area is fun but you can debate it's safety. But if you are coming here for the nightlife and gambling it's much more affordable that the Strip. Better payouts than the Strip too. There are safe places to live but the safety comes with a premium price.

Is Downtown really that unsafe? Are we catching bodies there slim jesus style?

Mainly homeless and some urban blight around the area.

Most of the bodies we catch here seem to be domestics or other non-random crime for the most part.
Who you hang with is more of a factor than WHERE you are in the valley. Or at least thats how is seems to me.

SO I guess it kind of depends, I know people who are fine down there ON Fremont. a few blocks away can get a bit sketchy and I ( a professed hood rat) would not walk around down there alone late at night .
It also matters which direction you happen to go.

I would say most of the valley is like this ..a few blocks can make all the difference.

If you're looking for what's considered the desirable, upscale, high density urban, singles experience (a la NYC) you're really not going to find it in Vegas.

Chinatown is in Spring Valley, or adjacent to it.

^That's what I thought.

Is around Chinatown a nice spot to live?

If your budget allows it, try to get into a high rise. You can get into Sky for $1300/mo or nicer places like Panorama or Turnberry Towers for $1450/mo.

If that's out of budget, Monterrey at Las Vegas Country Club or the Meridian are both guard gated and ~$900/mo.
