I'm a sporadic bus rider but is it me or has the bus experience in Vegas changed. Yesterday I was taking a bus and by chance it was during a shift change.

This stop is a usual stop over so waiting a few minutes is normal. Well this time the driver was getting off a shift so there was a long wait for the replacement. Well finally the replacement shows up. We are told the bus we are on is now out of service and have to wait for the next one. SMH...

The next bus arrives so now of course the driver has to do their layover thing. This whole process I will say took real close to an hour beginning from the original boarding..Not good.

As posted this is just a rant as on most occasions I have had a good experience when riding the bus but this time it would have been nice if the original driver informed the riders he was out of service due to a shift change as another route option was close by.

No major complaint it's just a rant.

For a while, I had access to the radio communications used by the RTC to communicate back & force with the drivers.

My opinion, based on listening-in over a period of months:

The drivers may be nice, friendly people, maybe they're good at driving a bus, but they're morons. Not just when it comes to RTC procedures, but in basic communication skills.

For some reason, RTC contracts with a third-party to actually operate the buses. I think the company name is Celeron or something like that.

There's a lot of insanity that occurs on the buses, especially certain routes & at certain times. Crime is so bad that RTC can't just call LVMPD or Henderson PD, RTC had to contract with a private, armed security firm to respond & try to handle incidents on buses caused by ****heads/drunks/crazies.

RTC has automatic vehicle locator systems which --while they aren't always accurate, sends alarms to a dispatcher if each bus is running fast, or slow. If a bus is ahead of schedule, the driver is told to slow-down or even stop & wait. If you're on that bus at the time, sucks to be you!

Maybe it's a "union thing," but when a driver is scheduled to go on break & he/she has passengers aboard, it seems like the driver is instructed to have the passengers exit at a certain bus, with transfer passes to ride the next bus.

RTC operates some sort of service for 'special-needs' people -- basically door to door service like Uber. The frustrating thing is that it seems like they're usually used to transport people between their homes & casinos, NOT between home & work, doctor, etc. & many times, the passenger isn't even there waiting for the driver despite scheduling the service...

It may just be a certain type of bus (double-deckers I think), but on hot Summer days, many of them overheat along their routes & are taken out of service, or the driver is instructed to lift the rear engine cowling & just sit at a stop for an undetermined amount of time to see if the bus will cool off.

Doing some sort of reality TV series about RTC buses would be fascinating, but RTC would never allow it because it'd scare-off potential riders.
