There are apartments in Vegas for 500 a month. You can live on 25,000. Just not well.

Why not well? I don't party or gamble at all.

After rent and expenses, you might have 500 a month left over assuming you don't have a car. 500 a month isn't really much money these days. It certainly doesn't cover many emergencies.
500 is about what it costs to buy a new cheap eco car and insure it.

That's 5,000 more a year than 25,000. That's almost double the amount of extra money. That makes a difference.

They did ... and I could do so as well.

That said, I've paid down my housing expense (I own) so it's minimal. No car payment. I live a fairly simple life with the occasional indulgence. I'm pretty pragmatic & financially disciplined. Just because it can work for me doesn't mean it can work for everyone - different strokes for different folks. Some people want to eat frequently at restaurants, go out drinking & partying. Some want a newer/faster car. Some go to Starbucks every day. That adds up.

The answer to whether or not you can make it on amount xx (I thought you were asking about 25K for one, now it's 30K for two?) will always be:

It depends.

Do you have a car payment? What other debts (credit card or otherwise) are you bringing with you? Do you go out to eat frequently? Are you a drinker? (Alcohol adds up quickly.) Do you have a good driving record? (Insurance can add up.) Do you live a lavish lifestyle? Can you be frugal & watch expenses? Do you make good financial decisions? Are you disciplined? Do you manage your life well or does your lifestyle control you?

Will you bring at least a 6 month cushion of savings for living expenses in case of job trouble? What if your car breaks down? What happens if you have an unforeseen medical issue? Do you have pets? What hobbies do you have that cost you $$? Be honest with these questions & more & you'll have your answer.

We could just tell you what you want to hear (sure! no problem living like a king on 25K); please be aware we're trying to be helpful by painting a realistic picture.

After all that ... yes, a single person CAN make it on $25K/yr here. Most will NOT. Las Vegas is a place where you can live very affordably IF you do your homework, stay disciplined & don't succumb to the vices the city offers. I like to say that Las Vegas magnifies your qualities (good & bad) so that it becomes polarizing. If you are an alcoholic compulsive sports bettor & reformed drug-addict with a stripper compulsion, it's likely going to be tough to make it here ...

Again, I ask: How are you going to make $25,000 a year and your roommate $100 a week?
