So the Mrs and I have discussed the idea of visiting a Mexican border town for an adventure.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Mexicali is good because it's not a typical border town, more like a regular Mexican town and its close to Vegas. Just go before summer.

Algodones, 5+ miles west of Yuma is, IMO, the dental clinic capital of Mexico, a small city of 40,000 or so, but you'll rub shoulders with a number of Canadians there for dental work, along with snowbirds, this time of year. Not a typical Mexican town, by any means. Been there a couple times for dental work, and buying meds.

Mexicali, IMO, is too spread out, very flat, not very picturesque, but once there, you can hop a bus to San Felipe on the Gulf of California, or take the bus to Tijuana, which I've done!

Tecate, 60 miles east of Tijuana, home of the Tecate Brewery, is a rather small city, but not the most interesting border city, not much of a downtown area.

Tijuana is more picturesque, I refer to it as "poor man's San Francisco" with their steep hills, with houses rising up the hillsides. This city can't seem to decide if they want one downtown or 2. The Zona Rio district is, IMO, bleeding the Centro, downtown area, which attracts a number of the middle class Tijuanese, with a big American style shopping mall, and upscale restaurants/bars.

I've made some 80+ trips to Tijuana over the 20 years I've lived here, and, after my last trip, last summer, I'm increasingly seeing more closed storefronts in Centro, and it could be, they're relocating to the Rio Zona district, who knows, but it saddens me, all the same. Although the main attraction, Revolution Avenue, is still quite alive.

And if you're really adventuresome (best night for it is Saturday night when everyone comes out) head to the Zona Norte district, just west of Revolution, an area jam-packed with bars, along with the Plaza Cecilia area. Open prostitution along Coahuilla Lane/Baja California Street, and the big red light tourist bar is Adelita's.

From Tijuana, just after you cross the Border, there's a bus station, where you can hop a bus to Ensenada, 70 miles south, an express bus which will deliver you there in an hour, with frequent buses all day long. Or, just go 16 miles south to Rosarito Beach.

Ensenada is a port city, a stop for cruise ships, so no beachfront, unless you go north or south of the city.

Too many have been deterred from going even to Mexican border cities, due to the passport demands. At every border city, as a test, I flash my Passport to the Customs Agent, and ask: Suppose I had left this in Las Vegas, any problem? No problema!!! IMO, it's unenforceable!

If you're one of these people who have been brain-washed by the media, that it's unsafe to visit any border city, and you're going to be nervous, then skip the adventure!

A bit of a drive when you pass the southern border from Arizona but Rocky Point/Puerto Penasco is a nice old seaside fishing village which is now also geared for tourists. You can have a great time there and very worth that short drive pass the border vs a bland border town.

My suggestion: ask this in a state forum that borders Mexico. Such as Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas.

I used to live in El Paso and its a nice city to visit and live in. Nearby Las Cruces and Mesilla New Mexico are also very nice and offer and enchanting experience. However, crossing the border into Juarez Mexico is not that desirable or recommended.

The really neat places are not easily reachable...fantastic places like Bahia Tortugas or Opreojos. These are coastal towns on Baja. Both do have highway access though off the beaten path. Nice stops on a boat.

I prefer Ensenada to Tijuana. Tijuana can be very nice if you know your way around. Had a good friend who owned a very nice house there. Long Beach physician who used the Tijuana house as a weekend place. In Ensenada stay at the hotel at the Marina. Caters to Gringoes but provide a nice base to explore the town.

Cabo is very nice but that is too far for a drive. Better off flying. And if you do that I would continue a little ways to Puerto Vallarta...particularly the towns north of the city...Bucerias and such. Great places Thanksgiving to Easter. Unpleasantly hot and humid in the summertime.
