What kind of **** doesn't let people merge onto the highway???
Well, I'll be. Never thought of it that way. If that was the case we would be in agreement. LOL at the checkout line.

If the left lane is closing and you get over before it closes you end up waiting in line for no reason and you see people whipping up your left side with gusto which frustrates the heck out of you or me and leads to people blocking said Lane. Zippering is simply saying merge when you need to merge, I go you go I go you go. NOT getting right miles early and getting pissed at people are passing you on the left and getting in ahead of you

Anybody driving the 95 Southbound towards spaghetti bowl twill know what I'm talking about. ( twice if you're in the HOV lane)
Highway patrol should set up and write tickets at lane closures. Can't slow it down for those who merge correctly and makes the jerks wait. Plus they pay a fine. Everywhere but here where, apparently, all it takes is a sleazy lawyer to get you out of a ticket.

I don't see the big deal. I've pretty much always done that anyway. I hate people who block traffic waiting to merge right at the end of the solid line, as much as I hate the ones who cross the solid line and try to cut you off in front of them. But after 52 years of seeing people from every part of the world with different driving habits and laws, I don't think any of us will ever be happy on the roads in Nevada.

Zippering is great. 1x1 is ideal, but even 2x1 or 2x2 is fine to accommodate the blockers. Lane closure or regular merging on to the hwy.. same deal. If you're merging in the proper zipper zone and get blocked, just move up a car or wait and try the car behind. If a scared old lady wants to merge in way ahead of time, just be patient and wait behind them. Or if an aggro driver goes beyond the solid line because he was too late for the proper merge zone, just let him in. No need for drama. You should see the driving in other parts of the world. India, SE Asia, S America, etc.. crazy stuff goes down and they brush it off like nothing.

Zippering works if EVERYONE is aware if it and applies it. As a merger driver I'm putting a lot of faith in the right lane freeway people letting me in at the very last minute. All it takes if a few ignorant/aggressive/selfish people on the freeway and I'm stuck, stopped and have lost all my momentum to get in. It screws the people behind me and encourages them to get aggressive passing me as I sit there.

It works fine at McDonalds merging in their double drive through, but there you are going 1/2mph and have direct eye contact with your "opponent".

I wish many bad things on drivers that speed up when I put on my turn signal. Which is why I don't use it as often as I should. It's a shame that being courteous and following the law is a detriment.

I am generally a pretty calm and rational driver. The one thing that can really set me off though is someone that doesn't know how to merge onto a freeway. I get it if there is traffic and general speeds are slow over all. But if I am behind you on an on ramp and the freeway is flowing at 65 or 70 MPH and you can't manage to get up to freeway speed by the end of the on ramp you are going to see the angry side of me.

The only exception that I know if is on the 110 freeway between Pasadena and Downtown LA where the on ramps have stop signs and then you are given about 20 feet of asphalt before you are expected to merge with the freeway traffic. But around here on ramps are in some cases 1/4 mile or longer (St Rose for instance). There is no reason (other than you driving a broken down old jalopy to avoid smog requirements) for not being able to achieve 70 MPH or greater on the on ramps.

I'll add another, similar example to my McDonald's double drive trough scenario where zippering occurs naturally. If traffic on the freeway is bumper to bumper and you approach an on-ramp, "you go, I go" just happens. No one questions it anymore then they do 4-way stop signs. Speed everyone on the freeway up to 70mph and everyone on the on-ramp down to 40-50 and all hell breaks loose. Fast people who already have a spot on the freeway ignore people trying to get on.

I've had people slam on their brakes at the end of an on ramp. Ended up going down the side of a hill one winter. Luckily the gentleman in front of me noticed, stopped, pulled a chain out of his pickup bed and towed me out. Ended up with a flat tire in a snowstorm.

Thank you pickup driver and AAA. Up yers old man in a Cadillac that should stay off the roads.
