We were in LV this past weekend for the nascar Race. and while getting a ride from a cab driver, he took us through a part of town that was....in lack of a better term 'scary'. It was just west of the stratosphere between the casino and the freeway. What I am wondering is if there are a lot of neighborhoods like that in Las vegas, or if this is just a really bad spot. The Cab Driver said that there are always problems there and it is a really bad spot of town.

This area is Meadows Village--or known as "Naked City" Not as bad as it was a couple years ago. There are far worse neighborhoods, most in "Alphabet City", on the west side. Fact is, that many of the areas that look good to many are just as likely to produce crime.

I want nothing to do with that entire area; on a couple occassions entered areas with one-way-in, one-way-out, that were flat out scarey, and gained safe access by what seemed to be the local "powers" in charge.

I actually think Lake Mead & D street is better then the area around the Stratosphere. I can drive by myself around that area, but of course only during the day!!!

Why would a cab driver take you into that area? There's usually no reason for any visitors to be in that area unless they are looking for drugs or a prostitute. I would consider that area to be the most dangerous in the valley. I've seen far worse things around there than Lake Mead and D. At least Lake Mead and D has a decent amount of single family homes and home owners who have been there for a very long time. That area behing the Stratosphere is loaded with transients, slumlords, prostitutes, drug dealers, and alleys. During the early part of the daytime in a cab, I guess would be okay, but I wouldn't want to be there as it gets closer to dusk. After that, forget it.

What a view the new residents of that high rise are going to have. Do realtors still tell them that it's an "up and coming area?" Anyone remember that article about a home owner selling (or attempting to sell) their small lot for some ridiculous amount? I remember reading about speculators trying to buy up several adjacent lots with the hope of building more high rises. I wonder how property values in that area have held up against their all-time highs?

I really dont know why he took us through that area. We came from the mirage and needed to go to Stratosphere. IM not sure if he was taking the long way around or what. I thought he was just trying to avoid the busy area of the strip so he could move onto his next fair sooner.
