We are new to the Valley and presently renting in Henderson. We need to get our cars registered. Any recommendations about where to go to get the cars inspected and smog checks done?

Also, I was looking at the online DMV estimate for fees to register our cars. We have a 2015 Cadillac SRX and the estimated value -- on which we apparently will need to pay over $800 to register -- is higher than what we paid for when we purchased the car brand new. I then went to several used car websites and the estimated trade in value is almost $20K less than the State's value. Has anyone had this problem?

LOL. Registration here is insane. I paid 1157 to register my truck.

You can get smog checked on any corner in Las Vegas. The DMV has inspection stations for the vin inspection. bring lots of lube.

Does the DMV take mileage into consideration or just the year of the vehicle?

The DMV uses the original (when new) MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) of the vehicle as the basis for determining the assessment. Doesn't matter what price you paid for it when you purchased it, current market value, miles, or anything else. They enter the VIN and then receive the original MSRP from some database. However, in my case, the MSRP only included the base vehicle price and not the options, which in my case was $7,000. The DMV then decreases the annual assessment by 10% each year for 10 years. This comes directly from my recent conversation with a DMV person via phone. Agree higher than many other states, but IMHO, still a very good trade off for overall cost of living difference (of course depends on where you are moving from). I came from a higher cost of living area with high taxes, fees, etc.

Considering that we have no state income tax, I'm willing to pay the vehicle registration, although it is high compared to many other states.

You can get deals all over town on smog checks.
