I'm looking at my options for moving the contents of my 2 bedroom house from Austin to Las Vegas and boy is it expensive!!! I was expecting to pay around $1000 or so but its way more than I thought. Renting a Budget/Penske/Uhaul is going to cost between $900-$1,200 plus I'm figuring $500 in gas (plus I have to find someone to drive it for me). Moving companies that load and drive and them unload your stuff for you quoted me $2,800+. PODS quoted me $2,800ish. Upack's containerized moving quoted me $1,500 for one container and $2,500 for two containers, their containers are about half the size of PODS and would not fit all of my stuff, so I'm thinking of getting one container and taking my essentials like our beds, dining set and boxes, selling the rest of my large furniture and eventually purchasing new stuff little by little when I get to Vegas. Does anyone know of a cheap moving solution that I haven't already thought of?

Sell as much as you can of what you don't need. Then drive everything that is needed in a U-Haul.

I was gonna ship my car, but that costs $1250. I'll be driving down there and pay half that.

Try and look for furnished apartments/houses for rent. And it SUCKS but sometimes you have to cut your losses.

NEXT VEHICLE will be a quad cab pickup truck though, if I had that, I'd EASILY be able to haul stuff in the back.
I couldn't do a "furnished" home. One, I have dogs so I doubt anyone renting a furnished home would welcome pets. And two - bed bugs are a real problem. I had bed bugs at one point and getting rid of them was absolute hell. Used furniture officially gives me the heeby Jeebies. I'd rather live in a bare bones house and full it with cheap Ike furniture little by little.

The problem is that once I factor in gas, the uHaul will cost the same as the Upack container and at least someone would drive the container for me so I wouldn't need to hassle with that.

I would recommend either calculating the uHaul mileage & gas fees and comparing against ABF UPack. I moved from the east-coast several years ago and used them, After comparing Uhaul/Mayflower and several domestic companies, ABF provided the most affordable rates and i still had enough for flight tickets etc. Not to mention that since you have a 2BR, You'll only pay for the amount of space that your move takes-up within the trailer, They'll usually over-estimate but you'll get reimbursed if its under.

I moved from Port Aransas to Seattle about 10 years back and I found Budget rentals quite a bit cheaper than u-haul. Alot actually. Imay be headed to NOLA soon and I checked prices again and yep Budget was much cheaper still..other than that I did what most here did ,sell everything I could .

UPDATE: I found out that Uhaul offers a Pod-like option called U-Box. They're basically a smaller version of PODs. I was quoted $1,200 for one and $1,800 for two. At this point that looks like the most affordable option thus far.

We got our Budget rental truck that holds 3-4 bedrooms of stuff for $343 moving from Las Vegas to Portland this summer. It comes with unlimited miles. U-haul charges per mile. What we did is sign up for the website and put in when we want to move. Then we waited and after a couple weeks or months Budget sent us the deeply discounted rates for the different sizes of trucks if we reserved now with them. That's not including gas of course.

Hmmm, my Budget quote was $751 plus tax so $900 total unlimited miles which is the cheapest of the "drive it yourself" trucks when compared to Uhaul and Penske. Once I factor in gas (I'm estimating $500), it's really not much cheaper then doing the Uship/crate option. However, if I could somehow get it down to $300ish that would be a huge savings. What is this website that you signed up for that got you the discounted rate?

Budget trucks

What we did is reserve the truck for the days we wanted on that site and it automatically gives you 20% off and emails you.

Then we kept searching and everyday for a month we'd search sites and hit theirs several times checking back until one day it was way lower and we took the new rate for our reservation and it emailed us the new lower rate after we reserved it again.

It appears they track your searches and if the flow of traffic works with their trucks at that time as people move and reserve online then you get offered new deals to entice you to stay.

I think Austin is also a much further drive to Las Vegas than Las Vegas to Portland so that may be a factor plus taxes.
