check out studentsreview.com, unlv has mostly good reviews. i don't live in vegas, but have looked at unlv myself. if you look at ANY school, some people will detest and some will worship. out of state tuition is actually pretty affordable compared to most schools. compared to east coast schools unlv is super affordable. You can't base decisions solely on reputation and "what school is better." You will be best off with the school and city you feel most comfortable in.

UNLV is surrounded by a tough area, but many colleges are

Penn is an ivy league school but i wouldn't want to walk around that West Philly neighborhood at night

my advice would be go ASU, as i think Phoenix is a great place for a college student, and 102390192321 x safer, but if you are set on UNLV i can't knock it

Rainbow Bar & Grill is a cool place on Paradise right by campus

Thanks so much Vegas_4u! You were a great deal of help!

Im visiting Las Vegas over the summer. If you wouldnt mind showing me around a little bit thatd be great. But if its too much of a hastle then nevermind. Itd just be nice to get an inside look around before I actually attend college there. You know? Get a feel for the place.

By the way, dont you ever get like a fish bowl feeling? Like being out in Las Vegas in the middle of the desert Id feel kind of trapped. Out where I live theres open spaces and its so green. But like you go to far out of Vegas and its a dry barren desert.
I dunno, I guess I would just get a kind of trapped feeling.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your suggestions and input. I wasnt aware that the area around UNLV was tough neighborhood. I kind of assumed that there was some urban revitalization going on due to the strip and its close location to the airport. It seems to me that the mayor would protect the gem of the city and its surrounding areas. As our Mayor Daley of Chicago does with Millenium Park and such. The gems of Chicago are kept pretty safe along with areas surrounding them. But I guess the mayor of Vegas runs his city a little bit differently.

Nick

Hmm. Let me rephrase. The feeling of having barren desert surrounding me with Vegas the only real oasis for hundreds of miles makes me sort of nervous. Like, I know Vegas is a big city but where I'm from the nearest Metropolis isnt a four hour drive through the barren desert. In Chicago there are tons of smaller cities all built into one and the sprawl stretches on for hundreds of miles. Then even in the suburbs there are smaller scaled cities where you can get the urban feel.

Its just to me that Vegas seems like a little bubble in the middle of the desert. An oasis in a sea of sand where your like surrounded by the barren desert on all sides.
I still cant wait to get there and live there itll just be kind of wierd at first I think.

That probably sounds really stupid in retrospect but Im not changing it now lol.

Lol I know thats what it sounds like but I dont mean like that. I guess its just a city thing. Once Las Vegas gets more skyscrapers on and off the strip and it gets more of a metropolitan feeling Ill probably be more fond of it.

The last time we visited though it seemed as though the only sky scrapers were on the strip. And I love the feeling of the urban environment. Eh I guess Im just being naive.

You need to come out and visit. Nothing you read on a message board can give you an accurate impression of what Las Vegas, UNLV and the surrounding neighborhood is like. I think it's a fine area to live, but others would beg to differ.

Don't expect a complete stranger to show you around town though. Rent a car and drive around. The city is not to hard to navigate.

Another thing - wherever you decide to attend school, you need to get to work on residency as soon as possible. Get a local ID and begin the process. If you can earn residency within 1-2 years, you'll save tens of thousands of dollars by the time you finish school. Too many people waste this opportunity and pay out of state tuition the entire time.
