I have been here about four years on a retirement visa. I have a condo close to CMU. I would say the weather is better in Las Vegas in March, April, October, and May maybe a tossup. If you eat what is fresh and plentiful, it is cheap. If you really like western food, and take your list to Tesco or Big C it can be pricey...mostly due to high import taxes on wine, cheese, cigars and some others. Pineapple is dirt cheap, potatoes about 60 cents per pound. Traffic is horrendous on Saturdays. Crime remains pretty low. Medical is well above average, even at the Maharaj government hospital. Plenty of private options if you hate waits and crowds. The uni students are quite pleasant, many seem to be on a motorbike death wish, though, and the overall driving is nuts...so I just use ample modes of public transport. Internet is fast and cheap, as well as domestic air travel. I call home for free with Google and my mobile phone cost me about one dollar per month. I really miss college football but get some games here, just very late at night. I may reestablish a home in the US, but just not sure how I would split the year, and there are health coverage issues, too. My GF has three daughters and she has really never pressed the issue of moving to the US, and that seems to be a long running trend...that it isn't considered the road to riches like it once was. Maybe she has been paying more attention to Fox News than I thought.

Thank you so much for the info. about Chiang Mai. I went to campus across from CMU. It was 30 some years ago. I would love to move back to Thailand but husband said not yet. We used to live in Thailand (2003-2006). We bought an EOG townhouse in Bangsaen, Chonburi(about an 1 1/2 hr. from BKK)but we sold it when we returned to the US. I just had a root canal done yesterday it cost me a little over $700, Ouch! that was hurt, even with insurance. My sister who live in Thailand(about 6 hrs from Chiang Mai) she said she just went to the Dentist at government hospital for free. One good thing that your GF doesn't press you about moving to the US, most Thai women would like to move to the US. Most of them think the US is the gateway to riches. I'm glad that I came to the US since the early 80's and had a good job. Most of the people in the US right now having a hard time. I took an early retirement but still have to pay Health Care insurance out of my own pocket, I'm not 65 yet so can't get medicare. My husband is over 65 so he's ok with medicare. I have been looking for a P/T job with health care benefit for almost 2 years now still couldn't find one yet. Cost of living in LV is still reasonable, except dental care. We live in Henderson near Sunset Station. We are carless (walking&busing). It's hot right now we got three digits degree for about a month now. This is our second summer here, when we first moved here a lot of people told us that if we can handle June, July and August temperatures we will be OK. Again, thanks so much for the info

The lady I was jogging behind, tonight, had "ANIMAL LABORATORY" on her shirt. Root canal was 235 USD earlier this year.

Back to the original topic - if you look at Summerlin, make sure that you ask about the HOA fees on any house that you are interested in. That put us off of Summerlin, as most that we were quoted were like a car payment. You are paying for several parks and common area maintenance. We bought in Centennial Hills, east of 95 and north of 215.

Actuallly the Summerlin fee is around $45. It is the local HOA that gets the bigger fees. And there are some HOAs with relatively small fees. They are not gated however and may be in the less desirable area...ie east of Rampart.

Thanks for the info on HOA's. Never had them when we lived in Calif but plenty of friends did. Can be expensive, although $45 isn't bad but the restrictions can also be a hassle.

Was this price(235 USD) in Thailand?

Yes, in Chiang Mai, by a specialist. Two roots and three canals. Outrageous dental fees are near the top of my list for not living in the US. Mexico has improved, but not nearly as good as Thailand. I am sure many in Vegas have gone to Algodones.

Thank you. Yes, I heard about how cheap it is in Mexico for Dental Care. My husband and I are talking about moving to Thailand next year, Hopefully. In the US the Health Care & housing expenses are eating up most of our retirement income.

I pay 102 us per month for a 250 deductible and one million us in coverage from Tokio Marine, who bought Tokio Marine HCC | Specialty Insurance. it doesn't cover cancer. At 65, Medicare offers a fairly compelling reason to live in the US...Romney wanted vouchers, which would have saved billions...Iam more than 10 years from 65...and it still isn't nearly free, but coverage here gets pricey at 65-70....many simply pay cash. Coronary bypass surgery is about 2000 in India...less than a crown root canal in the US.
