So my car has registration up for renewal this week. I hate HATE HATE going to the DMV office so I'd like to do my registration at one of this DMV kiosks. Do they let people do that? If so how exactly does it work?

You really don't have to go to the DMV unless you are registering a new vehicle. Almost everything can be done at the kiosk or online.

I transferred plates from one vehicle to another online with the dealer code provided at purchase. The DMV makes it easy to do almost everything from your computer--I wouldn't bother doing a kiosk and there is no need to visit the DMV for a registration renewal.

Just be aware the majority of kiosks in Albertsons ect don't accept cash payments.

In May, my new (2017) vehicle was registered electronically - via a Electronic Dealer Report of Sale (EDRS). The dealer set it up, and my plates were mailed to me. Didn't have to take a step into the dmv. Of course this vehicle only has two wheels.

I have done my renewals online for years (just did one about two weeks ago). It's far easier than the kiosk. Just use the ID number on the postcard that DMV sends out to log in.

On a side note, the DMV also lets you schedule an appointment for a lot things. When I bought my car last year, the dealer did not use EDRS mentioned above so I had to go the DMV. I used DMV Dash pass and I was in and out within 10 mins.

We did this for the first time this year. Super easy, just get your smog check first.
