Hello Las Vegas! I'm going to be arriving in Vegas on October 6th. Very excited and ready for it!! I have visited in the past and I loved it! I have some connections with respect to a place to stay, (friends and family for a month). Here is my main question. How difficult is it to get up and running in Vegas by doing temp work? Do companies drag their feet with long interviews and waiting periods? I have eight years of legal secretarial experience with corporate mergers and transactions experience and three years as a legal receptionist. I tried Phoenix for one year and it wasn't for me, but it has its pluses and minuses like every place so I will not bash it. I find Phoenix to be beautiful in its own right but very family oriented and very expensive as they tax everything. I don't have a family and I don't make a lot so I love the fact that Vegas has no state income tax and is single friendly and retiree friendly. The rents in Phoenix are skyrocketing at the moment so even if you make close to $40,000, it will not go far. My first choice back in September 2016 was Vegas and my family talked me out of it and thought it was a very bad choice because of the dangers. I regret not following my heart. Now I just want to give it a go! If it doesn't work out, I have family in Albuquerque that I can stay with and seek employment there. I'm very much a minimalist and frugal so spending is kept to a minimum while in flux. I've had no problem seeking admin employment in DC, LA and NYC so I'm wondering if Vegas is a different beast. Are there some decent paying jobs at law firms in Vegas or are they very hard to come by? I'm disciplined and work hard and if I have to I will work two jobs. So should I give it a shot or just go straight to Albuquerque? Thank you for your time!

You might do very well here. I would give it a go. Lots of lawyers and busy courthouses here. Take a look at the Clark County, State of Nevada, and US Government websites. You could put in applications now and at least be a jump ahead in the system. But none of these places hire fast. But I would guess you could pick up something with a law firm while you are waiting. Good luck!

If you don't have bad habits (gambling, drinking, drugs, etc), and have a positive support group, you will do great here.

Not sure about the work thing for you, but the people here don't kill themselves at work or career. They are floating by, for the most part.

I am sure you will be fine here.

I would recommend living in Summerlin (West) or Green Valley (Henderson), as these are the best areas outside of the city.

Vegas is easily better than anything in New Mexico and Arizona.

Also, you will be moving at a great time. The weather will be great for the next 8 months. Its gets very hot in June-August, so be prepared for that. As long as you are close to a pool, you will be good. Just drink a lot of water, and stay out of the heat as much as possible during these months.

Good luck !

You sound like you have the right attitude to be just fine here. Many people work a couple jobs until they find the right one to pay the bills. The cost of living here isn't bad at all if you don't succumb to the vices this city has in abundance. I just moved here a year ago and I wouldn't change a thing. Good luck!

Phoenix is quite a bit better job market. It is truly a Hellhole, though. Vegas is less rewarding to those with good educations. It seems to be a culture of low education. Possibly, because CCSD is as bad as any school district in Phoenix, which is pretty bad. Having done six Summers in PHX, and one in Bullhead; my one Summer in Summerlin was a walk in the park. Vegas is not anything like the high growth, affordable city it once was. Not even a good place to gamble. Iran, Burma, Cuba, North Korea? Three out of four would be better than most of the Midwest.

You are comparing parts of the U.S. to Iran and North Korea? That is a huge insult to a lot of Americans.

To the OP, also check out some of the legal staffing places. They often have temp work that they can offer and you can sometimes start right away.
