My 21 year old son is hoping to come from the UK to get temporary work on a H2b visa. Does anyone know if there are specific organisations in Vegas who employ hospitality seasonal staff? He is a door host in Glasgow and has a good work record there. Does he have to go through an agency for this or contact firms directly?Any info is gladly appreciated

This is second hand info, but I believe that an employer has to want you bad enough to jump through all the hoops to bring you here. It is up to the employer to fill out all the forms to submit to the State of Nevada Employment Security Division. They forward it to the Federal agency, which I believe in our case is in California, and you wait months for it to be processed. Then if it is accepted you hope the job is still available I guess. I had the impression that most of the applicants were relatives or friends of relatives of the employers.

The employer has to prove that he can't find an American to fill the job. I worked with the woman who handled the paperwork here in Las Vegas. I could never get a lot of information out of her, but she told me it was her job to prevent foreigners from taking American jobs. When either employers or job seekers called her she went ballistic on them, saying they were not to contact her directly. If they filled out the forms correctly she sent them to California and California had a backlog of sometimes (she would say) up to three years. From the things she would tell people, she apparently looked at it as her job to stop any and all immigration. I don't know if she was trained that way or not, but I as she reported to someone in Carson City I wouldn't doubt it. However, I don't think it really stopped anyone and I believe that most of the applicants were probably approved in a few months.

I don't know how much was true but it was the second worst case of a truly nasty, mindless bureaucrat, that I knew while working for the State (in both cases I happened to get along well with them so I don't know what that says about me. ). Her phone conversations were so loud, and just plain mean, that everyone in the office would just shake their heads. I couldn't believe that they didn't fire her. But most of the managers are totally gutless and only want to make it to retirement without rocking the boat. I can't watch the TV show The Office because for me it is too realistic and sad rather than funny.

Las Vegas is so heavily swamped with illegals willing to work menial service jobs, I doubt many employers will go through the legal hassles and visa fees to bring someone from overseas.

The ones I've seen were mostly Asian and mostly doing it for relatives, but most countries were represented.

Nope. Venetian imports temporaries. Others do as well. Culinary would just love to catch Adelson using illegals, or any of the non-union shops...
