The LVCVA blamed part of the decline on a reduction in room inventory caused by casinos launching extensive property renovations. Las Vegas room inventory declined in November by 0.5 percent, or by 800 rooms, to 148,690.

Brian Gordon, an economist at Applied Analysis, said the lack of available rooms on most days in Las Vegas underscores the health of the local economy.

“Overall, the fundamentals appear stable,” said Gordon. “Occupancy levels continue to hover around 90 percent for the year, suggesting demand remains relatively strong.”
Sounds about right. I visited several strip properties this past weekend and they were packed.

Be REAL careful with that link - it was trying to download all kinds of garbage to my computer.

As to tourism.....we normally visit every 3-4 years (yeah - y'all would go broke waiting for us...lol). We were talking about coming again in January, but neither of us really felt the urge to go. LA is hours away, and frankly with all the fingers dipping in your pocket out there now (taxes, fees, etc.) and the changes in pay-offs (especially w/BJ, my favorite) it's just not as enticing as it once was. We're also generally not a public transit fan, and the fun of wandering the strip has been reduced (for US) by all the overheads/stairs/elevators required to go a couple of blocks. While we understand why it was done, the "we're going to protect you from you" barricades and such are just a huge turn-off for us.

I'm sure we'll be back again - but it's just not as compelling (in our minds) as it once was.

No one wants to stay at Monte Carlo right now, and Ballys, Flamingo, Harrahs, and Cesars all have rooms off line at the moment. Thats a large reduction in rooms.

I don't understand TexasRedneck. Are you saying the pedestrian bridges connecting the casinos is a BAD thing? Buses running along LV BLVD is also bad? What would you prefer? Fighting with cars which are trying to go inside the entrance to the casino instead? If anything the strip needs more pedestrian bridges so cars going to the parking lots never collide with pedestrian crossings.

I highly recommend installing adblock plus and ghostery into your web browser. Both applications are free and will make pages load faster because they block ads/garbage. You have the option to whitelist sites and also disable the plug-in on any site you want.

I heard Palace Station is totally closed for renovation. Can anyone confirm that?

I'm actually surprised to read this. My husband and I were at the Orleans a few weekends ago and it was so packed you could barely walk through the casino.

I'm old school - I LIKE walking around and experiencing things. Having learned how to navigate crosswalks as a child, it's never been a big deal to me. And getting past the cars going into the casino's was just never much of an issue to us. Like I said - I don't need a nanny-state trying to keep me "safe" from everything.

Way off base. Parts are experiencing construction disruption, but far from anything being closed. One thing that has changed is all the dumpy motel rooms have been closed and torn down so the cost of rooms has gone up since all that cheap inventory is no longer around.
