Most likely it will be close to Washington DC. There's nothing like a headquarters near DC to influence public policy.

I am perplexed as well. I suspect it won't actually be an HQ in the traditional sense of the word. I suspect it will be more like satellite functions. For example, they could move Treasury and Tax and some HR functions, and probably some R&D projects, freeing up space in their first HQ for expansion.

My understanding is that the division managers would select where they want their business unit HQ to be located and the staff will follow. I'm sure there will still be some satellite offices but the goal is to consolidate divisions.

Newark doesn't have $7 billion to give away unless they're laundering it for someone else. I'd expect that with Bezos if he feels so compelled to buy his own newspaper to lie for him.

Actually Newark would potentially provide $1 billion of local property tax waivers and $1 billion of local income tax waivers over the course of 20 years. The state of NJ would provide $5 billion in tax incentives over 10 years based on jobs created. It's the max offer that Amazon can possibly get.

Where'd you get 0.05% of talent from? I was under the impression they would be hiring 40,000 employees. Your numbers don't compute

amazon isn't paying lots of $$$ for good talent. They want to pay the min as these are mostly backoffice jobs. Plus they work you to death - read the reviews.

If they're calling it an HQ, it's, by definition, a front office. For a lot of their tech, marketing, and financial work, Amazon needs people who can command substantial salaries. They may not want to pay them, but if they don't, they won't keep employees they need. And they don't have a great reputation in the tech business, so they're probably not the first place people with marketable skills want to go.

Back office jobs have increasingly been automated out of existence and/or offshored. Amazon strikes me as a company that would be merciless in doing this.

Some more than others. I worked for a company that dabbled in it, but never made a big move to do so.

But more to the point, I was responding to the comment that the jobs at the new "HQ" would be back office. They won't be, and this is one reason for it.
