Auditioned for a poker dealing job at the Mirage in March. Everything went great I got called to go take my drug test which of course I had no problem with or so I thought. Nobody bothered to tell me that you have to have prescription print outs that are not any older than 6 months if they detect pills in your system. Well I had a bottle of Lortabs from 7 months ago and had hurt my back about a month before the audition. Needless to say it showed up. I tried to fight it because the pills were legally prescribed to me. My concern is now that I have seen my doctor and everything is legit with the pills how long before I can apply to another property. Do I have to wait 6 months?

I think he's saying that he had some left over from an older prescription, and started taking them again because he hurt his back just before the audition.

OP - The "Enter" key is over there -->

Drug tests are hit or miss, kind of surprised pain pills last a month. Even more surprised they hassle you about a prescribed drug you have a history of using. I'd personally say they really were looking for an excuse not to hire you.

Not likely. The drug tests are done on the hiring company's dime so they aren't going to send people to get them that they don't want.

I don't know about The Mirage specifically, but many(all?) companies use a 3rd party lab for the drug test and the results are black and white pass/fail on the hiring side (the lab sends pass/fail results back). I doubt that any big businesses are digging into individual drug tests and making decisions on that level.

I assume the "fail" is now on file with MGM. I wonder how long they hold on to such information?

Trust me on this one, a lot more happens behind the scenes than you think. Sometimes higher ups will do this just to **** on a manager. Other times another manager might have agreed to hire someone else and they need any excuse to get rid of the other candidate. Or the GM of the room or the group of rooms in the case of MGM might have been taking complaints from established crew that not enough shifts were being given out and he just put in a hiring freeze to deal with it. In dealing jobs a lot of top notch dealers will pick up and quick one room and be available to another room.

I mean there are a dozen reasons why it happens and frankly its not the fault of the applicant nor the manager who wanted to make the hire. As you might have heard casinos are insanely political organizations and drug tests are easy ways to have politics assert themselves. Truly veteran workers of the casino floor will quite often not tell anyone or assume they have a new job until they actually start the first day. A good friend of mine, a shift manager of a poker room, did double duty for two weeks just to make sure he didn't get screwed out of a job in a room he really wanted to work in, but was afraid was either going to make changes to the room's operation or that someone would get installed at the last minute ruining his job. He'd rather work 16-17 hours a day for a few weeks than leave one job, start the next job and then end up unemployed a few weeks later.

This is 100% correct. The larger casino/hotels do hair sample drug tests. This, coupled with the extensive background check they run on you, is not an inexpensive proposition for them. These tests are also capable of testing for drug use much longer than urine tests, but I heard they're not supposed to go past 6 months. Regardless of what shows up PAST the 6 month mark. Could be mistaken of course.

Edit - forgot to confirm... MGM/Mirage does indeed use third party companies for this type of thing.
