He might consider HVAC tech school.

One strategy to consider: offer a landlord 3 months or 6 months rent in advance.

He will have a heck of a time without a job to secure his own place or even a roommate situation.

Some ideas:

If his conviction was drug/alcohol related, he may be able to get into one of the few sober living homes. I see their ads on Craigslist rooms/share section. A lot of those folks are felons due to their addiction. These are generally bedroom rentals with house rules.

You and/or the family may have to sign the lease or co-sign for him.

There are some private landlords who will go month to month with first and last but you/he will have to be upfront.

As another poster said, his PO is a potential wealth of information.

I live in Red Rock Country Club, one of the nicer guard gated communities in Las Vegas. After O.J. Simpson was released from prison he moved here into our neighborhood but I can tell you it was not on Red Arrow Drive behind the gates.

Fellons are good anywhere in Las Vegas.

He should first get a job. Then get a place.

Try renting from a private owner. Skip those using a professional leasing agent. When looking at the unit, make small talk and coyly sneak in a statement like... "so all I need to do is pass the credit check and pay the security deposit and first month's rent.. right?" Some condo HOA's require a background check, so you want to avoid paying an application fee if that's required.

Another option is answering a "to share" ad. If he's a third among other 20 something's, doubtful the other two would run a background check (again unless required by the HOA).
