Some interesting stuff about Hughes in the article including how this tragedy affected him for the rest of his life.

The Conqueror: Did this toxic movie give the cast and crew cancer?

John Wayne smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish and wound up with lung cancer in '64 and had one of his lungs removed.. Lived another 15 years and died of stomach cancer.

I think there's other things to point to for his cancer rather than being near an atom bomb test.

The National Atomic Testing Museum is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about Nevada's history as a nuclear bomb tester. It's all quite fascinating and that museum is very well done.

Soon after moving to Co. in 77 I had the privilege of getting to know one of Opie's peers. Harry was responsible for overseeing all the monitors and detectors set up all over the blast perimeter and beyond.
Harry was also the engineer who set up the first AM radio station in Denver.
Here's an insight to how his mind works.
While ice fishing he stated, when the wind comes up, just move to the other side of the hole.
