We stayed downtown last year and aside from the huge crowd it was fun. Fireworks were on the west end in front of the Plaza. It was nothing breathtaking or spectacular, but it was okay and lasted maybe 15 minutes or so.

Fireworks? Are you guys talking about the smoke show that last 8 minutes courtesy of the crooks running this town hiring the same company year after year? Just save your money and travel elsewhere in the world if you want a fireworks show.

This will be my first new years eve since moving to Vegas. We live near Majestic Park so we are planning to park somewhere near there with a good view of the valley

You're going to be disappointed.
The casinos are a lot bigger than they seem. The fireworks they shoot off will be about the size of ants from your perspective there.
I went to San Diego 2 years ago for the 4th and their display was far better than the best Vegas display. It's really disappointing. I'm a huge fireworks fan. Vegas lets me down every single time.

I respectfully disagree with the other posters regarding July 4th. While some Strip displays may be disappointing, the whole valley launches fireworks - both individual homeowners and various public places - and if you have a good vantage point, it goes on for literally hours.
I don't know about New Year's Eve - I suspect that fireworks are limited to casinos and maybe a few other public places, and not as as widespread as July 4th. That being said, here is my recommendation.

New home development is proceeding apace and by July 2019 the views may be blocked by houses, but last summer it was a fantastic vantage point. Should still be great now.
