My understanding is Race Books are not very profitable, especially in the smaller casinos. The overhead is high, especially the cost to televise the races, and the handle isn't. Horse racing players are a dying breed; the younger gambler doesn't show much interest in betting horses.

I do think the first part is true, but about "dying breed"? no so as all one has to view are the crowds at not just the Derby race at CD but others like the Breeders cup and today at Gulfstream park. the pick 4 was over 1.5 mil for races 9-12. thanks for the reply

with all the new mobile betting apps getting so much use, why go to casino. the stations app has a race book part which allows you to make all the bets and they will also allow live race video with minimum $20 bet i think.

And they lost what, 10 customers for that? Vegas casinos should just do the smart thing and allow ADW providers like Twin Spires and Xpressbet to enter Nevada. There is no value in trying to hold onto that business and hardly anyone visits Vegas because there are racebooks available.

Sure, the young ones will go and bet big stake races, but they’re not sitting in a smoke-filled casino room day in and day out.

Used to be free flowing drinks in the books...any two dollar bet would do. I used to get Cadillac Margaritas with my nominal bets in Laughlin. All smiles..a buck tip per round.

Whyhateme's post is well taken. Sure, there will be interest in the triple crown races and a scattered few others, but that doesn't justify the cost involved for most sports books to maintain multiple television feeds and take bets on multiple races at multiple tracks across the country on a daily basis. The last few times that I have been around sports books when horse racing was about the only thing going on, the small handful of players there going over the tip sheets were guys my age, in their 60s. I didn't see any young blood there. That is precisely the issue. Maintaining multiple race cards is time intensive, and if the return doesn't justify the investment, sports books will stop doing it.
