My home warranty company sent out letters to their customers saying that the refrigerant known as "R22", better known as Freon, will be made illegal January 1, 2020.

"After R22 becomes illegal on January 1, 2020, older R22 systems become obsolete and can no longer be repaired when the repair would require adding refrigerant to the system."
https://aristair.com/blog/how-will-t...commercial-ac/

Apparently most units from the 1990's still use "R22", mine included. So they are offering a "deal" for existing customers.
I would require a 4 ton unit. They are offering a Lennox 4 ton unit delivered and installed for $6,096 -or- $76.00 a month for x many months {not sure}.

Of course they said their price was the best price and they encouraged me to look around. So I went online and saw that Lennox is the same brand Costco sells. I'm going there this weekend to get their price. I went online and saw some basic quotes for a 4 ton unit at around $3,200..NOT installed.

Right now my unit is working just fine, but it has had it's basic problems. Any suggestions on HVAC dealers?
I'm in Henderson.

Good thing I checked because my wife was pushing to sign the paperwork right then and there.

Is this true? Should we all be buying refrigerant to have on hand? I sure don't want to be forced to spend thousands for lack of a can of freon!

Someone should start a black market in Freon.

Here is a link to the EPA website regarding R-22: https://www.epa.gov/ods-phaseout. It appears that it can no longer be manufactured or imported.

If you are considering getting quotes for replacement systems, you may wish to consider getting several bids now before the temperatures increase significantly. We replaced all of our systems a couple of years ago, and I got all of my bids in October and November when I thought demand would not be be as high.

We utilized Sunrise Service, a factory authorized Carrier dealer, to replace all of our HVAC systems. We got bids from five other companies as well, all of which were factory authorized dealers for other brands of equipment (e.g., American Standrad, Trane, and Maytag). From my research the brand of the equipment appears to be somewhat less important than ensuring you get a good installation. We had Carrier equipment previously, and it generally worked well so we decided to stick with that brand.

Your HVAC company was a bit over zealous in trying to sell you. Any production or importation of R22 will stop in 2020. You will still be able to buy R22 as it still available in new and recycled forms. In 5 years, that probably won't be the case.

Can't we just all use another gas? It just has to phase change right, I don't see what needs to be so specific about the gas you use. I mean dupont lobbiest sponsored laws aside.

There are aftermarket replacements for R22. Probably more expensive than r410a but won't require a system replacement.

In theory, propane is a suitable replacement, but not licensed for ac use in residential.

If the condenser is shot anyways you may as well change out for r410a. The availability of R22 and substitutes is only going to get worse and more expensive with time.

If home AC's are anything like car ACs then technically you never need to top up freon *if* there are no leaks in the system.
