Part of my plan to lower my Cox bill is buying a new modem. I was told I was required to buy DOCSIS3.1 by Cox.

It is only required if you have the Gigablast package. For the lower tier packages, 3.0 modems are fine.

I bought a 3.1 modern to try out the 1Gb down (30Mb up) service. I had a 3.0 modem that worked perfectly for Ultimate tier. 1Gb tier was good, but for me it was basically indistinguishable from the 350 down I get from their Ultimate tier. They have a hard 1 terabyte limit (download+upload combined) for all tiers including the 1Gb service, which is ridiculous. They want another $50 a month for unlimited data.

I'll switch to 5g if the speed is comparable and price is better than Cox. Cox pricing goes up $6 every 6 months with no reason given. Also the data caps are really lame, especially when you pay for their highest speed and still only get 1 terabyte.

I switched from Ultimate to Gigablast today and what they don't tell you is that if you connect via WiFi, you're still going to see Ultimate download speeds. I went to the hardware store and picked up a long ethernet cable to hardwire my computer to the modem and got speeds very close to the advertised range.

I've been delaying the purchase of a new phone until T-Mobile starts selling the Galaxy S10 5G which I'm now reading will be this Friday the 28th. Looking at the coverage map, 5G will me extremely spotty at first which is to be expected. One area that seems well covered is Downtown and, luckily, I go there frequently so I'm looking forward to experiencing the new service.
