Unfortunately, convention attendees are not traditionally big gamblers.

Well, they spend their money when they get here just like everyone else does. I know a few conventioneers that come here every year that save up all year long for their "business trip" to Las Vegas....you think most of them go to their convention and then go sit in their rooms and twiddle their thumbs?

Supposedly, tourism was up slightly as well.

I'm wondering if this report was just a good publicity stunt...

No town is recession proof, and a lot of companies are cutting costs because of rising operating costs. I know in my own personal biz, I spend $20-$30 bucks more a week on gas and I cut costs by buying chemicals in bulk and shopping around different suppliers that will give me the best deal. I don't want to raise my prices, but if costs keep going up, I'm going to have to.

Convention attendance, tourism in Las Vegas up

Convention attendance, tourism in Las Vegas up - Las Vegas - MSNBC.com (broken link)

Well, according to this article...

Slow economy slows down Vegas (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/fea/travel/columnists/lasvegasadvisor/stories/DN-webvegas_0413tra.State.Edition1.19a5254.html - broken link)

4/15/08
"Concerns about the slow economy and its possible negative effects on Las Vegas are proving justified, as a trio of important indicators was down in January."

*Strip gambling down 1.3 percent
*Airport traffic down 2.8 percent
*Visitation down .6 percent

Myself, I was in Los Angeles this past weekend and gas is between $3.70-$4.00/gallon there. That has to cut into the amount of weekend traffic coming into Vegas from Southern California.
