As I posted - after a month we're back to square one. Have not gotten the quote, work has not started - NOTHING! So we're now in search of a new company to do home renovations - the house was built in 1999 but the owners were very old, and everything that was done to the house was done VERY poorly/cheaply - even the casita. So we'd like not just new flooring, cabinets, bathrooms, if possibly some walls taken down. Any recommendations for a company to handle such a project, FAIR prices and dependable? Thanks in advance!

Have you checked Yelp? Angie's List?

And if it was the company I recommended I apologize. I'm guessing they don't want the bid. See my post in the other thread.

No need to apologize, I appreciated the information - not every interaction is the same, so NO worries!

Sometimes realtors know some remodelers that are competent and reasonable. Somewhere in the valley is a professional contractor that is looking for work along what you have in mind. The trick is to find them. If you have had any contact with a realtor, give them a call.

Depending on where you buy your products, they might be able to recommend folks to do the work. You might not want a general contractor, he takes a cut to hire out subcontractors. Buy your flooring and have the flooring vendor install it. Same with cabinets, bath rooms etc. A flooring guy is not going to install cabinets. Shop around for best prices on the things you want to buy and see if the places do install work.

That said, if you want walls torn down, you need a pro to do that. Good luck.

So instead of spending time finding one contractor you spend more time finding five or six?

I know guys who built entire houses that way. Saved them many thousands of dollars but took longer. Essentially, you become your own General Contractor. Up to you if it's worth it or not. GC's have connections that may or may not be good at the time and their subs may or may not show up and do good work. It's a crap shoot.

Good luck finding an honest, fairly priced GC with good subs. Either they are too busy and want to charge too much due to "supply and demand" or they are hungry and want to charge too much because they need the money.

We were very happy with the GC we used. Not happy that they screwed over the OP. I will no longer recommend them.

So you're saying GC's will charge more because they need money, but the ones you find on your own won't? Doesn't seem right.

I think he is saying if GCs are very busy, they will bid jobs they don't want or don't care if they get, high. If they don't get it, great, they didn't want it anyways. If they do, it's so lucrative that they'll fit it in. Plus they can put less effort into bidding it since they know it's high and they have plenty of room even if they missed some details, there is room in the bid to cover it.

I think it's pretty commonplace. I've heard of it plenty of times.
