The FAA were concerned with the 459 foot tower interfering with North Las Vegas airport? What about the 815 foot World Jewelry Center that was about to start construction in 2008 at the corner of City and Grand Central before the recession killed it? That was literally about to go up perpendicular to the runway.

Well, I would love to see more tall buildings in Downtown Vegas, downtown is usually where most tall buildings are built in most cities.
Downtown Vegas is almost undecernable on the Vegas skyline. My thought was that if big non-gaming related companies move their offices to Vegas (which no doubt some will in the near future), at least 75% of them will want to be located in the Downtown area, and not on the Strip, which is dominated by casinos and resorts.

This is the first time I actually ever made the connection between North Las Vegas Airport, and building heights Downtown. I always kind-of wondered why there was only a handful of tallish buildings Downtown. After discovering the World Jewelry Center, which wasnt built solely because of the recession, it took me by surprise to hear that the FAA was concerned with a building barely half the height.

I am not so sure big non-gaming companies will be moving to Las Vegas soon, or even in our lifetimes. But even if they did, I doubt they would move to downtown. Tony Hsieh tried that with mixed results. If we do see any business construction, it will probably be in southwest Henderson where the Raiders practice facility and The Block are being built. As for the City of Las Vegas, it is a place for businesses to avoid. The casinos fought hard to remain outside in unincorporated Clark County.

If you like tall buildings, or what I would call a skyline, the Las Vegas Strip is one of the most iconic skylines in the world. I, for one, love looking at it.

The Stratosphere Tower was originally supposed to be 1,800 feet tall. The height was reduced to 1,149 feet due to opposition by the FAA.

Las Vegas, in case you haven't noticed, is not a traditional city. "Downtown" is not the same as in other major cities. The skyline is the strip.

I would also like more dense housing in the Las Vegas metro, and downtown is the perfect place to focus on, but ungodly tall buildings are problematic.

In major urban metros, most buildings do not go over 10 stories as that increases cost and complexity of the build. For residential the "goldilocks" height is around 6-10 stories, depending on how valuable the land is.

There's plenty of empty parcels of land and surface street parking that can be developed. Those should be developed first before building anything over 20 stories. Single Family zoning should be eliminated in Clark County.

Sooo... you'd like to see tall buildings in Downtown Las Vegas, even though all the upper floors would be vacant & mothballed?

Very true. The variable costs of operating an already-built skyscraper go up as well - it is inefficient from an energy perspective as it takes progressively more energy to cool and heat a tall skyscraper of the type you see in NYC or Chicago compared to operating an equivalent amount of space in a collection of mid-rise buildings.
