I'd suck it up and stay with MGM. You've only been here for a couple of months and basically are going through a bootcamp. Somebody is always watching to see what you're made of. If you leave, the chances of you advancing your opportunities decreases. You're still relatively young; you should be thirsty. Thirsty to make a name for yourself so that in one to two years when they run your file, they'll see if you're worth promoting? Every job that I got after my first job here, I got through word of mouth. I worked the hardest through the recession. My reputation preceded me. I remember feeling so homesick after the newness wore off, that was about 6 months in. Happy mettle making. Good luck!

I'd love to see stories of people who worked at MGM at an hourly-wage job for XX years and then moved on up. Not saying it doesn't happen. Just curious.

My girlfriend says it takes about 5 years to switch from on-call dealer to full time. She's on her 2nd year of maybe 2 nights a week. But hey, there's always the prestige of working for MGM.

If you're on call at MGM, you could apply for full time jobs at Caesars, Venetian, Wynn, and be taken seriously.

Caesars, Venetian, Wynn......jeez ANY of those brands would give you prestige. I'd say screw the 5 years....apply somewhere else.

My point is that once you're in a major strip property you can move up, either within the same company, or with the others. The trick is getting established in one of them. Working at some random hotel or restaurant out in the town isn't going to do that. You might be able to get in at a strip property, but likely back at the bottom of the ladder.

I personally know somebody who started as a dealer at Circus Circus that rose to VP of Table Games Ops at MGM Grand in about 7 years.

Those full time dealing jobs have been going away now. Increased operation costs and lower demand. It does not take a rocket scientist to see the future in table games.
