It doesn't matter what the company is. Those data centers don't bring in many jobs. Getting excited about one coming to Vegas as if it's going to be an economic boon is silly.

Can confirm that Google only listed a handful of openings for the data center in Henderson. I know, I applied for two of them.

I remember hearing a figure that if computer engineers worked for themselves their pay would be $400k/year on average. When the average comp sci is getting paid 1/7th of that...there is obviously a problem.

Oh really? Of course a computer engineer is not a computer scientist, but what does glassdoor say about computer scientist pay?

Average Base Pay

$110,700/yr

$400 / 7 = 57. Math is hard.

Your argument is that I didn't say 1/6? OK Boomer. Maybe next I'll be telling my friends in Cali working in Silicon Valley to come to Vegas because a guy called Cold Warrior said it's a good idea because of the data center jobs.

When Switch went into Michigan, the locals were pretty realistic about local near term job growth being pretty marginal but figured the additional business travelers coming in for 1-3 week stays to do work at the pyramid would spend enough to be a net positive on the local economy. There's also a 'come for the work trip; stay for the good beer' long approach with a hope that over time there will be spin off business from Switch in an area that can position itself as low cost of living-high quality of life for potential investors down the road.

Better than nothing but nothing to go crazy over. That's how you should react to a data center coming to Vegas. I'm fine with them being here as long as they don't get some sort of ridiculous tax break.

On a side tangent, if anyone has IT openings at their place of employment, please shoot me a note. I'm already scouring all of the normal places.

Found out a couple weeks ago my company is outsourcing all remaining infrastructure. Only IT left will be management layers.

Especially if you're a Bayesian.
