If Las Vegas has any intention of diversifying the economy in a meaningful way, it needs to provide better education. While I’m not in favor of taxes, the sad reality is that you can’t expect better outcomes when we are spending 33% less than the National average per pupil.

How can you expect companies to relocate here when we rank nearly dead last in education and have only one college in the city that is marginal at best.

If you want a high tax “diversified” economy, move back to California. Some people enjoy a lower taxed economy with less services and the better quality of life that comes along with it. Why does every state have to be like New York or California? If that is your cup of tea, move there.

Very few people are moving because of taxes and even fewer for regulations. They are moving because of cost of living and quality of life issues like traffic. Taxes and regulations motivated people are very small in number, mostly small business owners and rich retirees. Many of them don't even want to spend much more than 183 days in the state each year.

You realize that taxes and regulations are what makes the cost of living high, right? Right?

Or maybe people who want the lower level of services that come with lower tax levels need to move on from Nevada. Things change. Perhaps Montana or Wyoming?

What part of taxes is not included in the cost of living?

The high cost of living in CA is driven by the cost of housing. Everything else pales in comparison. And that housing cost is driven by the desirability of the regions. That desirability has also driven the population density which drives infrastructure costs higher.

The SW states including CA have always run education on the cheap. Clark County is even worse. Guess which school district in NV spends the least per pupil?

You all can try to turn this into a bigger political debate if you want, but the question at hand is will state voters approve a 1.5% increase in sales tax for schools. I will continue to say no way in heck that's happening. Go look at the history of statewide initiatives for taxes. They don't win. Doesn't matter if the state is turning blue. This kind of ask would fail in a very blue state, let alone one where voters turn on tax proposals. Maybe the legislators might to a degree approve of tax increases, but tough luck the voters have to approve it.

Same thing is happening in Montana. All the California people move to Bozeman and start complaining that it isn’t like what they moved away from and start demanding more taxes and services. No need to move on to anywhere. If you live in a low tax, low cost area, the locusts will eventually start showing up on your doorstep demanding more of your money for the children.
