Yes, you do. To actually know.

I do know that there are many fine children raised in and around Detroit.

Does a city dictate how your children will fare?

Have you even ventured off the strip to see what the neighborhoods are about?

Do you not have enough faith in your parenting skills and morals to override the outside stimulation your children will face? If not, you will be in trouble whereever you go. Unless you put them in a box and keep it closed. Don't let them go to the beach, read a magazine, go on the internet, talk to their peers, go to the mall, watch tv, even go to a private school. Were you not young once? Don't you remember?

I could bore you with stories from both sides of the fence-first hand stories, but I think if you are an intelligent person-you really do get it.

Personal preference of a location is one thing. Blasting it because you think it will make your children "bad" is just ridiculous.

Great Post! Exactly what I was trying to get at!!!! If you are raising kids or trying to raise kids, different story. But the tread says "Is Vegas a good place to raise kids?" Unless you are doing it or have, your responses are really of now help to people who are thinking about moving. For the simple fact of the matter is YOU ARE NOT DOING IT!!!!! Raising kids is a lot more then saying things. Unless you are or have raised kids, you really do not know what the he** you are talking about.

Before I had my daughters I would say things, but after you have them everything changes!!!!

LOL Ok, Las Vegas is the VERY VERY VERY BEST city in America to raise a child! 2nd, but it was ALMOST a toss up, is Detroit. People who even ask questions like this crack me up. Me personally, I'd spend enough time in Vegas to draw MY OWN conclusion. I wouldn't ask a question of that kind of IMPORTANCE on some website. If someone don't know the answer to that question, they obviously haven't spent enough time there (if any). You don't have to spend alot of $ to take 3 or 4 trips to Vegas to draw a conclusion. And If someone is that strapped for cash, and can't afford to do that, they got no business moving there with a kid anyway.

"How does a city dictate how your child will fare"? I don't KNOW how much time you've spent in the city of Detroit, but that statement leads me to believe probably not alot. To begin with, they're the MURDER capital of the US. I've seen twice in the last week, 2 inocent kids being shot an killed there.

I heard on the radio a few weeks ago how they're selling houses in Detroit for $1 dollar. People think that news? They were doing that ten years ago when I was working there. They don't tell you though, how you'd have to mount an M-60 on your front porch in those neighborhoods.

As far as parenting skills? How many 'latch key kids' does America have now? It's not too common for mom to greet the kids as their walking in the front door from school. Especially now in these tough economic times.

Me personally, I see NO point whatsoever to live in Vegas if you ain't going to spend alot of time on the 'Strip' or the surrounding area. I hear people say all the time how Vegas is MORE than JUST the Strip. Really? How does any of those 'cookie cutter' subdivisions or 'strip malls' differ, than say Phoenix? You couldn't tell the difference if someone took a blind fold off you and told you to guess whether you where in a subdivision in Vegas or Phoenix.

And lets not forget about the Vegas summer. Kids can't run around outside ALL day like they could in a different climate. I'm not saying they can't ever leave the house. But come on, the sun ain't no joke there. If someone wants a warm sunny climate to raise kids in, I'd say Orlando would be better. To me, Orlando is the 'Vegas for kids'. And they'd be living the similiar suburban lifestlye in Orlando. Not that I'm a fan of Orlando.

During the mid 90's I went out to Vegas to live. I was out there about a month and I left. I decided after the 3rd week, and just stayed to have a little more fun. It's a great place to blow off steam and party. But, why live there if your going to live a Phoenix lifestye? That's like living in NYC and being a 'hermit'. What's the point?

How many people in Vegas where actually even born in Nevada? What's it like, 1 in 4? It just doesn't feel like a real place to me. WAY too MANY people coming an going there. Now, if someone got some GREAT job oppurtunity there with a BIG salary, go for it. I think when ANY place or city is HYPEd like Veagas or NYC, the REALITY of living there is alot different than the hype.

I'm not bashing Vegas either. It's a great place to have fun an take a vacation. But, my opinon it's not a great place to raise kids. I'm also from back east though. The lack of green grass, hardly any tress, no real water (casinos don't count), and even the lack of CLOUDS, yes CLOUDS, just seems weired to me. I don't like the west in general (except the pacific northwest) cause of that fact alone.

Funny, Like you said you lived here a month!

I live in Vegas, I am raising a child and I am a stay at home Mom, who works from home. I am a suzy homemaker who makes cookies and cooks dinner for my family almost every night. How you raise your kids is up to you, not the city! And guess what I also take my daughter out in the summer! A lot of the parks have water activities, so when the children get hot they go play in the water. Plus I have a pool, and 50+ sunblock. And what kid now a days plays outside all day?

Vegas is just like any other city, except for we have the strip "Sin City". But most families do not live on the strip or wish to. There IS a life outside the strip.

Sorry, but how can you draw a conclusion on 2-3 weeks during the 90's. I have been here for 10 years, and this town has changed so much. So how does someone who lived here in the 90's and who did not raise children here really help some one who is looking to move here now?

I wouldn't call spending a 'month' in Vegas living there. More like 'looking' to live there (and I have been back several times since for vacations). Your a 'stay home mom'? That's great, but what % of mothers there can claim that?

Please, I'm saying this respectfully, PLEASE don't say that Vegas is like ANY other city. That is SO FAR from the truth, it AIN'T even funny. I don't know how much of America you have seen in your life. But some desert town filled with 'casinos' and 'cookie cutter subdivisions', isn't what the rest of American cities look or feel like. Saying that it's like Phoenix (without the strip), I can understand. But saying that it's like the rest of American cities is crazy.

And believe it or not, there are kids who run around and play all day outside during the summer still in America. The 'life' outside the 'strip' consists of what? Strip malls?

I have lived from San Diego, to the small town in PA. So Yes, I have lived around. In a small PA town, I believe that I got into more trouble them most kids here. Small town = Nothing much to do, but get into trouble!

Vegas is just like every other town, if you stay away from the strip. If you live your life around the strip then you are an idiot parent. You need to be raising you kids, not hanging out at the Casinos. Most of the parents on here are the type of parents that live their life for their kids, not themselves.

And vacations are not considered living here.

Like I said before, you did not raise kids in Vegas. So an opinion from someone that is not doing that is really not helping the OP one bit

You're saying "town" now instead of "city" like you did before? There is a difference. You have living in Pa before, would you say that Vegas is Like Philly or Pittsburgh? City or the suburbs? If you stay away from the strip? What's the point of living there then? Atleast in Phoenix you have ALL the pro sports teams (which makes it atleast feel like a real city), and I'd think a little more of a diverse economy.

When did I EVER say that I lived there? I've spent years of my life travelling around America. Believe me, I know the distinction between a vacation or visiting and living somewhere.

exactly, Las Vegas will never be like a Philly, Boston, Chicago, DC, or NYC...but it is the west coast and that is why it is the way it is...and that's why i'm going back to the east coast in a year...its a different lifestyle...everyone has a different opinion of where they want to live...you have a choice, it is America...
