There are vaccines that work well against specific viruses. For example, the Shingrix vaccine is about 90% effective in preventing Shingles. The influenza vaccine is less effective, but still offers protection at the margin.

You may be thinking of the specific type of virus vaccine researchers are attempting to produce. Early data are encouraging, but it ain't over 'till the fat lady sings.

On the other hand people are going to be bankrupt, businesses lost, houses lost, lives ruined, suicides, we will all be alcoholics, and I could go on. I thus get that too. I don't think it's so simple to just close stuff down as all that does is kick the can further down the road. Eventually we are all getting this thing... unless a vaccine is developed which I believe has never been done for a virus. We can't just keep kicking the can down the street forever. Eventually we have to take our 1-3% chance and hope we survive. So I don't think it's so simple that your mind should be blown just because not everybody sees it exactly as you do. It's a pretty complicated mess I would say.

You should look at Asia to see how they keep their economy open and handle the spike of Covid infection. The key is everyone take the virus seriously on mask and social distancing, it reduce the disease transmission to a minimum and economy can go back to a certain level of normalcy (restaurant open but no bar, no school, no concert. If they breach that line, they will have spike and school will have to close again). And if the test and track is effective, we can open school but no mass gathering (no parade, no concert etc). That is where Taiwan do very well and they remove the mandatory mask already because they have so little infection in June. Singapore and Hong Kong is in the second tier that they have occasional spike but they are able to bring the spike down and their economy is still going ok. Export are down since US is still in chaos and Europe just reopen but internal economy are functioning. US problem is entirely self infected. We make wearing mask a political problem. My guess is that we will be severely punished with crashed hospital system, high death rate when the medical system crash and completely out of control infection in selected states with high number of people don’t follow the best practice. Apparently latest in thing for the young group is a Coronavirus party. We are a country full of selfish and ignorant people who do not believe in science nor willing to read news.. You wonder why European and Asian people are willing to follow the best medical practice while in US, we are still debating if the virus is a hoax. And the stupid believe is that if a state open the economy while the virus is rampage, business will do better. The news is that when people are fearful of catching the virus, they won’t go out and visit the stores or casino, or mall, or restaurant. That is business 101 that our leader fail to understand. The really interesting question here is NY/NJ corridor are also in phase 3 opening, how can they keep their infection rate low while Texas, Arizona, Florida get into such a big mess?. There are report that refrigerated truck are being ordered by a few Texas county muck like the height of New York covid-19 crisis. The on;y difference is that NY already shut down at that point and Texas is still resisting a full shutdown. I guess the question is how many people has to die and get seriously ill before everyone take this virus seriously?

I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it's not."

Those were the final words of a 30-year-old patient who died at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio this week after attending a so-called "COVID party," according to the hospital.

Dr. Jane Appleby, chief medical officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital, said in a recorded statement that the unidentified patient told nurses about the party, which she said is hosted by someone diagnosed with coronavirus.

Public health professionals around the world have lauded Taiwan's response to the coronavirus pandemic. Along with nearby countries such as South Korea and Singapore, Taiwan has employed policy responses to Covid-19 that are worthy of emulation around the world. Taiwan, in particular, effectively contained Covid-19 by springing to action early, coordinating a government-wide response to the virus, and clearly communicating with its citizenry.

Austin and Travis County are “in the process of procuring a refrigerated truck to face the surge in COVID-19 deaths,” Travis County public information officer Hector Nieto said.
The mobile morgue will be placed where there “is space for it” and where it is needed the most, whether closer to hospitals or to the county morgue. Nieto could not confirm when the unit will arrive.

XO, thank you, great posting. IMO the success of Asia with this virus is that Asia is run by adults, not politicians, and they take governing seriously.

Here is AZ they refrigerated trucks are heading to the hospitals too.

Las Vegas may have to shut down again, as might AZ where the virus is really spreading.

Politician is a reflection of the voter’ s preference in a democracy. The voters is the problem. US is a big country and we have educated folks, uneducated folks, and folks who don’t believe in science. A lot of the are making the wrong choices now and they and their neighbors will pay the price will sick people and dead patients. My guess is that when states and locality are punished enough with high Covid case and all the associated medical and economical problem, people who were oppose to wear mask or social distancing will change their tune quickly. Texas Governor already changed his view and Trump wore a mask in public for the second times yesterday. Unfortunately it is a process that will take a few months to years on the back of a lot of sick people who may have long term after effect and dead people. Our dead total from covid 19 already passed Korean War. There is really not much a governor can do once their local health system crash and burn and cannot take care of rush of new patients other than a complete lock down ala Wuhan. . All the political slogan and empty promise won’t help since lock down is the only solution that will work in that circumstance . Texas, AZ, and Florida will have to shutdown again is my guess. So wil Southern California. It is amazing to me that currently New York Covid positivity test rate is in the 1% while some of the more problematic state is in the mid to high 20%. Economy in NY/NJ corridor will do a lot better going forward while other states are still fighting the condition war. The difference, I think, is that people who live in NY/NJ corridor Live through hell in March and take the virus seriously much like People in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korean do. They are following the best practice and keep the infection down. It is a disease that we can control but so far a big subgroup of folks in US decide that it is a hoax or it limit their freedom too much.

The constant change of lock down policy hurt business much more than a longer initial shutdown. I live in Northern California and want to move LVS or Florida for my retirement. Our local county just shutdown outdoor dinning yesterday after reopen it and business openers are furious about the sudden change and the amount of money and effort they loss in preparing for the reopening.

What's embarrassing about the whole thing is that the country as a whole, did nothing with the 4-8 weeks of shutdown. Most states (with lack of leadership from the Fed) didn't get testing lined up along with contact tracing. It's like we did a half-assed shut down, then just punted. So we in effect, killed the economy for naught.

You do realize that the largest country in Asia is China, don't you?

More deaths than Korean and Vietnam wars combined, and climbing daily, with refrigerated trucks now arriving at hospitals in FL, TX and AZ to hold the deceased. Here in AZ it's spreading faster than any place on the planet. Yeah man, that's some real winning....

Probably should close this thread since we'll soon need a thread to talk about what is re-closing.....
