I would not be surprised if we see more companies increase their footprint there

I agree about Austin and I would add it's probably been about 25 years in the making. Hopefully the powers that be in Vegas use a city like Austin as a model of how to improve the economic diversity of the city. No Vegas doesn't have a school like UT but it is closer to Silicon Valley and a lot of people desire to live there. It can happen in Vegas too but it will take time.

It would take a tectonic shift in resources, alignment across the university, local and state government and private investment and enterprise. I just don’t see it happening here in LV. It’s a shame, since it’s well positioned to do so geographically.

IMO "the university, local and state government and private investment and enterprise" are geared to the gambling and hotel industries and as such do not appeal to Musk; he and they don't understand each other.

IMO what appeals to Musk is what appealed to Bezos when he was looking for his HQ2 location: excellent universities nearby, tech industry companies, educated tech people, mass transit, etc. Bezos selected the area known as Crystal City, VA, right near National Airport. I've lived and worked there in the past, it has all the things Bezos wanted, including multiple mass transit stops.

Austin is far more in line with what Musk wants; the tech talent he needs either is already there or is willing to move there, but not to LV or Tulsa.

Here's some current info on what Musk is seeking in TX. Some of the comments are informative.
